Let’s Draw FEATHRUARY!
Plus a peek in my sketchbook & what I've been up to 👀
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 5 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube
If you’ve been around for a while you may remember we had a #feathruary theme this time last year. It was very silly and filled with birds, and people, and bird-people! This year will be no different, except that maybe it’ll be just a little bit sillier!
#Feathruary is bird-themed art challenge with daily prompts for the month of February cohosted by missy maxwell (projectparlor) and Michell Rey F. @mischievousredfox, now in it’s 8th year!
They like to mix up the format and this year they have an art-related theme for each week to prompt you to come up with your own list of species! Choose birds to collage, paint, draw, sew, sculpt, print, sketch, etc., inspired by your favourite art movements, artists, craft and folk art art, and colourways.
Please follow and tag @projectparlor @mischievousredfox and @feathruary on IG so they can see your work!
It’s my goal to keep ART HANG PARTY! free and accessible for everyone. If you like what I do here and are able please show some support over on my Kofi or join the ART HANG PALS on YouTube.

MONDAY JANUARY 26
Question: What is your favourite comfort YouTube channel to watch?
Mine lately has been Caroline McQuistin and her slice-of-life-on-the-Isle-of-Skye vlogs. There’s just something about her that is comfy. And my gosh do I love when she takes us out on a walk!
This is a still from a walk she did in Scotland in her recent vlog. I forget where specifically, but I’ll tell you that Scotland moves higher and higher up my travel list.

TUESDAY JANUARY 27
I think I found the best tactic for taking worry from your mind: limited palette master studies!
Getting lost in trying to find the right colour to match what you see in the painting. Placing elements in the composition. What way to lay down the marks. Your brain doesn’t have much time to think about much else.
(We took Simon to the vet today because he’s had diarrhea for a few days now. All will be fine, but being back there, in the same room we said goodbye to Knit wasn’t easy, you know?)

WEDNESDAY JANUARY 28
Today’s self portrait might be one of my favourites of all time. Not for me, but for how I captured Simon’s “Mommy is crazy” face.
THURSDAY JANUARY 29
Today was UNUSUAL LIGHTING at ART HANG PARTY!
I had no idea how today was going to go. I didn’t even know where to start with the references, but thankfully Reb came through with a great selection (🙏)!
At the very last minute I decided to go digital. Nothing else felt right. I have a file prepped and saved in Procreate that has a sketchbook spread as a background, which makes drawing digitally feel a lot more analog. It’s like some fancy mind trick!
I have linked the file below if you want to try it out!1
I also really enjoyed the timing today. We started with 2 minutes and then added a minute to each new reference, which of course became more and more complex as we went.
I have a few rules that I set for myself when drawing digital. 1) Try to stick within the limited colour palette 2) No zooming in and out 3) No erasing. In fact, I have gone so far as to disabled the double-tape to undo feature all-together.

The nice thing about working digitally is that you get to see a time-lapse! Expect to see more digital drawing at AHP from me.

FRIDAY JANUARY 30
Today’s self portrait was done using leftover paint from yesterday’s self portrait, which I also did today.
SATURDAY JANUARY 31
I planned out my travel kit for Tokyo today with the help of art friends! I did a somewhat spontaneous livestream on YouTube, and it was so much fun (see more below under the video section).
I had a flip-through of past travel sketchbook to remind myself what I took and what I actually used, which was extremely helpful in allowing me a pretty minimal kit in the end.
The only thing I knew with certainty was that the Zig Calligraphy dual-tip chisel-tip pen was coming with me. Then we swatched out and debated a few different watercolour palettes, talked me out of bringing my Lamy Joy fountain pen (though there is still time for me to change my mind LOL), and ruled out and added a few others.
Here’s where we settled:
Tiny watercolour palette from Olinda's Artistic Oddities filled with Holbein HWC watercolours.
ZIG Calligraphy dual-tip chisel tip pen
Camel rainbow pencil
Caran d’Ache Luminance pencils in Ultramarine Violet and Deep Indigo
Derwent Inktense pencil in Flamingo Pink
Two water brushes
Pencil sharpener (might switch this one out for the one I regularly use. It’s the same size, but better)
Pit glue stick
Pith Kabosu sketchbook
Self-made tool pouch that holds everything perfectly compact (not pictured)

SUNDAY FEBRUARY 1
This evening I’m going to pre-record a session or two of AHP for when we’re away. There will be two pre-recorded session, but I don’t think I have it in me to record two in one day. The themes will be figure drawing and master studies, and I have no idea which one I’ll do yet.

When I look at these stats I wonder if I’ve forgetting to log something on the tracker, but then I remember that I did two self portraits on one day and thought I should note them as such, hence only 6.
Want to track what you use? Download my Art Supply Tracker for free over on my ko-fi shop!
Usually I would have filmed this as a video, but I remember thinking last year how much nicer it would have been to plan out all the art supplies I’m taking on vacation as a livestream! So I did!
It was sooooo helpful to have input and suggestions from art friends. To be able to weigh the benefits of this palette over that palette, and to learn some new things! Like, for instance, did you know that you can fit 15 half-pans in the little Roman Szmal travel palette if you turn them vertical? 🤯
I’m pretty happy with how my travel kit came together. Very minimal but extremely functional with room to play!
Big thank you to everyone who showed up to help!

Your self-portrait with Simon is the best 💕 and I am happy is better now (I read it on Discord) :) have a nice week Melissa!
Happy that Simon will be fine soon.
Great master study!
