THURSDAY, MARCH 28 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube & Twitch
This week we’re drawing vintage ads!
There’s something so fun about looking back in time to see how brands used to work their magic to try to get us to spend our hard-earned dollars! Things felt a little more wholesome, definitely more humorous, sometime (often a lot) more cringey.
I’m really excited for this week!

SUNDAY MARCH 17
After dinner I opened my sketchbook and had a bit of a daydream!
It’s inspired by a photo Peachy posted from a book of boathouses over on Threads combined with me describing my dream house to my niece on the weekend - HOW I WOULD LOVE TO LIVE HERE!
MONDAY MARCH 18
During my morning substack reading over coffee, I was reading a recent post by
. In it she shared a photo from her window from a little converted pig shed she stays at sometimes. How magical!I knew immediately that I needed to draw it. Do you ever feel that? You see a photo or a scene and just feel so compelled to capture it in your sketchbook? This photo was like that, so I asked in a comment if she would be ok if I did and she graciously said yes, so here it is!
I used a combination of Kuretake paints, coloured pencils and Neocolor IIs.
TUESDAY MARCH 19
I missed the live Downton Abbey Draw-Along drawing session
did last week, but thankfully she shared a replay! Kaly gathered screenshots and relics from season one of the show and shared her encyclopedic knowledge as everyone drew along. It was nice that she had a few different images on one slide so people could decide what they wanted to draw (this is why I love attending other drawing sessions - everyone structures theirs a little different and I get to gather ideas for ART HANG PARTY!)It was a very relaxed time in my sketchbook and I highly suggest you check it out!
WEDNESDAY MARCH 20
One of my favourite things about our little online art community is how generous everyone is with sharing their knowledge and advice. I think it might have been during last week’s ART HANG PARTY! where I most recently mentioned how hard I find horses are to draw (though I’ve definitely said that more than once 😅).
Enter
! who offered up the sage advice to ignore the details and outlines and fiddly bits and just focus on the overall shape, blobbing it in with paint. The details can come later. She also suggested looking at already-stylized horses and start there, then move on to more realistic ones (which I’ll do soon!)These are the result of Kristin’s advice and I love them! (I also kind of mostly did this on the horses above from Marloes’ photo)
After the horses I pulled up the replay of Sophie McPike’s Scribble Brigade (which was live at 3am my time 😴).
The theme again was animation backgrounds. Since I already had my Holbein watercolour palette out I decided to stick with it. We had 5 minutes for each reference so everything is a bit loose and abstract, which I really enjoy!
THURSDAY MARCH 21
While lunch was in the oven I decided to try some horses, this time from random photos of real horses on Google Images. I did these super quickly but think I was able to keep the somewhat-same wonky vibes as yesterday’s working from stylized horses!
And then it was Shoes on Feet Week at ART HANG PARTY!
For this session I opened the timing up for the chat to decide if we wanted stay quick, like we have been doing, or to slow things down and up the timer. Turns out everyone has as hard a time as I do making decisions, LOL! So we started with two minutes and then added one minute every 4 or so references, ending with a few 5 minutes.
I decided to use my Inktense pencils for this session which allow me to be scribbly and a bit painterly (have I mentioned lately how much I love these pencils??)
FRIDAY MARCH 22
This week has been a bit light on client work so I decided to work on a portfolio piece that may turn into more and is still very much a work in progress.
It’s an illustrated map of past and present record shops in Toronto! After putting in this much work (LOL when you don’t properly brief yourself!) I’m going to remove the “present” stores as I don’t want to run into any issues with logo use and all that, and add some more from the past. I’m lucky to know a lot of local DJs who are like music historians for the city so I’ve been collaborating with a few people on it, which has been fun!
As I was eating dinner I was watching Ohn Mar Win’s latest YouTube video and got super excited to draw her reference photos for Landscape Art Club (as she was doing in the video), so after I finished the dishes and had a play with Simon I did just that!
The left page had some pretty crazy acrylic paint randomness going on so it was fun to colour over it with wax pastels. I used my Holbein watercolours and a mix of Neocolor Is & IIs on the right.
SATURDAY MARCH 23
We had a really nice afternoon catching up with an old friend at a bar downtown, so by the time we got home and made a quick dinner I wasn’t in the mood for doing anything too involved in my sketchbook.
I thought it might be fun to do a “build a cafe” scene, returning to the Pinterest board we collectively worked on for ART HANG PARTY! I picked references we didn’t use in our session to put the left page’s scene together. The right page is just me drawing a photo and not piecing it together.
I used Inktense pencils along with a black Polychromos colour pencil for the linework (it’s water-resistant so a great liner to pair with the water-soluble Inktense)
SUNDAY MARCH 24
I made a very last minute decision this morning to sign up for
’s classic album covers reimagined as cats session. We were just back from our morning walk and I had about 30 minutes to shower and eat breakfast before the zoom started, but I decided a bit of a Sunday-morning rush was worth it for this one.
I’m glad I did!
was cohosting and collected so many cute reference photos, from David Meowie to Fleetwood Cats to Outkats. All! So! Good!As usual, we’re still mid-afternoon on Sunday as I’m finishing up to send this post out, so whatever else I get up to today I will share with you next week!
A quick little sketchbook tour of all ART HANG PARTY! and Scribble Brigade sessions!
And what! Another sketchbook tour for you! I’m finishing these things like they’re microwave popcorn 😂
