THURSDAY, JUNE 26 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube
I have to admit that this was not the first theme I pulled from the theme pot.
The first theme was Antique Shops, but as we had just finished drawing 16 vintage pottery vessels it felt very much same-same. So, with permission of the group I pulled a second theme, and it was Still Life!
During the show and tell and after seeing Merrill’s beautiful marker drawings, I decided it was finally time I get over my marker-tightness. I made a pact to use them this week in an effort to become looser!
So in addition to the still life theme (where photos will be submitted by the community—dm me your’s if you want to submit one for us to draw!), I challenge you to bring whatever material you feel most tight or least comfortable with, and we’ll get over that hurdle together!

MONDAY JUNE 16
had a lovely coworking session this evening on zoom, and when she sent out the reminder I knew I needed to draw the cover photos she used for her post. It felt very much like my great aunts and uncles sitting around the kitchen table. As we were chatting about all things and nothing I pulled up some old family photos saved in my camera roll. One being my grandma and one of her amazing puppet creations, the other one of me and my dad standing in her garden.
I finished my main sketchbook the other day (I have so many sketchbook tours to film!) and decided my next sketchbook would be a Muji sketchbook. The paper is so nice and smooth it’s perfect for colour pencils.

I received a lovely packaged stuffed full of so many fun art supplies from Sarah!
I’ve always been curious about Pith sketchbooks and I have a feeling I’m going to be hooked. The other sketchbooks are Ugly Sketchbooks, and the black one has yellow paper and the pink has a light teal. So cool!
The bottle is for wetting watercolours (much more precisely than haphazardly spraying with a spray bottle like I do), and the little pots are for ink with suction cups so they don’t spill!
The wooden tool is for gelli plate (I need to look it up), but I think I can also use it for sewing/embroidery! And the pens and pencils will be fun for drawing sessions and taking out on the go for colourful squiggles.
And the watercolour! After filling in the swatch card and loving the colours I knew I needed to take them for a spin, so I opened up the Pith sketchbook and did a quick and loose painting of my grandma’s garden. All the colours are so nice that you don’t need to do any mixing, although it is fun to let them mix on the page.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 18
My morning substack reading was full of inspirational collage from the likes of
and , so when it came time for art I thought I would have a go!I did a loose background on a small piece of watercolour paper, then I roughly sketched out flowers and let watercolour be watercolour, extending over the lines (Citla-style). I then cut everything out and just started pasting them down wherever they felt like they wanted to go.

THURSDAY JUNE 19
It was Vintage Pottery day at ART HANG PARTY!
Thanks to everyone who answered the pole in last week’s post, we had 5 minutes per reference, which felt just about perfect.
I used the new Viviva watercolours from Sarah and look how lovely they are! I mixed in Inktense pencils for some of the finer details. Such a lovely combo!
Here’s a quick little flip through of them all! I’ll be sending these out with any new shop orders until they’re all gone :)

FRIDAY JUNE 20
The other day I started to cast on (is that the right term?) an embroidery project that I’m working on for a friend who will probably read this newsletter so I’ll just share a little snippet of it (although there’s a good chance this might give it away).
It’s been nice having something on the hoop to pick up here and there to work on!
Also, happy first day of summer! To celebrate (not really) we packed up our things and had a nice time sitting in the park across the street.
I took my Muji sketchbook, Neopastels and a few Cretacolor Mega Color pencils, trying to stick with my limited supplies for park outings. I’m learning that I probably need a few more Neopastels to round out my collection, but overall I’m pretty happy with the colours I chose.

Simon has been healing from an infection in his paw this week, not that he realizes it.

SATURDAY JUNE 21
I finished Ray’s jacket! The arms are just about the same length, which is good enough to call done! Well, I still need to embroider “Theo” on the chest but I’ll get to that at some point.
He was very reluctant to pose for me, but here’s his fashion stance 🙃 I know you can’t see very much details but you get the idea!
I got a good chunk of the surprise embroidery done today as well. I just need to do a border and then pop it in the mail!

SUNDAY JUNE 22
It’s coming up on noon today and I’ve already had my sewing machine out to hem a pair of jean shorts and we’re about to head out on a walk, so I’m going to leave it here and share whatever else I get up to in next week’s post.

Ok I will admit this is a long one! I let not two, but THREE sketchbook tours back up so I thought why not do them all at once. And while I was at it, why not also share the fun things art friends shared with me recently. Then I had a book delivered this afternoon so I added that in, because why not!

Ok, that’s it for me!

You did it!!! You got a Pith! I love the Kabuso size! I’m almost scared to ask…do you like it!? I know you’re great at working across different brands and types of sketchbooks, so i’m SO curious to know your opinion, especially as a watercolour fan and mixed media fan.
The jacket turned out great, Melissa! And I’ve been wanting to try an ugly book but it may have to wait for now until I find a Canadian supplier. I’m curious to see what you think of them!
