THIS WEEK IN MY SKETCHBOOK
Monday, September 18
We ended last week finishing a sketchbook, so it stands that we start this week with a new one!
The first thing I like to do is add stickers to set the vibe. This one is feeling good!
I thought it appropriate to start off with some master studies. It’s how I started my last one, and how I ended it, actually. Maybe it’s the beginning of a tradition? Only time will tell.
These are from photos I took at my recent trip to the AGO. The left is the one I wanted to draw while there, but was feeling too shy. And the right just felt like it belonged beside it. I’ve noted the artworks and artists on the page (if you can read my writing)
Tuesday, September 19
I didn’t have much time for my sketchbook (because we were going to see Duran Duran!), so I played “Pinterest roulette”. I just made that term up, but basically I opened Pinterest, closed my eyes and vigorously scrolled until it felt like the time to stop, then pressed my finger on the screen and opened my eyes to see what showed up. It was fun, it was random, I cheated twice, until a Tiger Balm package appeared! LOL. Who doesn’t love Tiger Balm??
Speaking of Duran Duran! This was my second time seeing them (Ray’s 6th or 7th!) and they never disappoint.
I have a ton of videos but I’ll share my most nostalgic song (memories of early romance, LOL)
Also on the short streetcar ride home I found these! Unopened, still-in-the-wrapper Neocolor I’s!
Wednesday, September 20
What’s cool about my free Neocolor I’s (aside from finding them and saving my future self 50-bucks because we all know I would have bought some eventually) is that they are all colours I don’t have in my Neocolor II’s!
If you don’t know, the difference between the I’s and II’s is the one’s are not water-soluble. In my limited experience the I’s are a tad bit harder, but essentially feel the same. I’m excited to combine these with watercolour at some point, as a sort of wax-resist (something I’ve been on the search for! Wow, the universe provides eh?)
Anyway, I thought I should execute my (other) new sketchbook tradition and add some end-papers! I mixed some turquoise acrylic paint with gesso and covered the front and back inside spreads. Looking at the colour it felt like red was the right contrasting colour for my pattern subject, and what else would I do but add strawberries?

Did I mention last week that my new art card prints came in? I’d be surprised if I didn’t, but I can’t remember!
🍓 SHOP UPDATE! 🍓
I’m very excited to share that I have a brand new set of art cards added to my shop! It’s a set of 5 reproductions of original artworks, including my most favourite ever strawberry painting! 🍓🤗💖✨ You will also some find some recent (and not so) original paintings and a few other goodies.

ART HANG PARTY! day!
While I waited for the stream to start (I’m always ready wayyyy to early) I decided to do a little test-drawing on my ipad to loosen up and get a feel for the brush I was panning on using (dry ink if you’re curious). I didn’t get a timer and drew the bananas that were sitting on the counter.
And then it was ART HANG PARTY! And we drew a whole bunch of jewellery!
I have to say that these all turned much better than I was expecting them to! I love the ones I put a little shadow on. I would have done so on all of them but you know, the timer.

I will definitely go digital again in the future, it was fun!
Friday, September 22
It has been quite some time since Ray was home on Friday evening. His weekly Friday gig has moved to Thursday now, so after dinner we thought we’d brave the cooler evening weather and go sit in the park.
I’m still loving the messy-goodness of laying down inktense paints first and then scribbling with a fountain pen. I’m not sure this one is as good as some of my previous, but that’s ok. It was still really fun!
We were sitting at the Music Garden close to my favourite (local) willow tree. It was looking all shadowy and windy and inviting me to paint it. I’m not sure I’d call this painting, but it’s something, LOL.
I tried putting in the shadows first with inktense paint, then went crazy with neocolors and inktense pencils, then more inktense paint, then thought I better stop because it kept getting worse and worse, haha.
But Simon’s paw is cute.
Saturday, September 23
My niece stayed over Friday night, and Saturday morning we headed out for a visit to the AGO before she had to catch the bus home.
Here are some things I saw:

I decided to do a study of the poppy painting above. I was planning on just using inktense paints, but added in some necolors for bit more depth. I like how this one turned out!
Sunday, September 24
After helping Ray get all his DJ gear for the Sunset Disco Finale to the bar, getting Simon sent off to the dog-sitter, then getting myself ready, I headed out probably too early to Joe Bird for the party!
Knowing I would be way too early, I packed my sketchbook and a single brush pen, so while I waited for more people to show up I sipped on a cider and did some sketching at the bar.
It was a really fun day that turned into a really fun night! Check out the video below to see for yourself!
VIDEO OF THE WEEK
This Sunday we celebrated the finale of Sunset Disco, a weekly house music community social that @djrayrayca put on at Joe Bird at the Harbourfront Centre in Toronto - the fam came out! I decided to leave the background in because I think it helps to tell the story, which is utter chaos! Hope you enjoy!
🤗💖✨
Ok, that’s it for me!
See you Thursday at ART HANG PARTY!
