Let’s Draw SAME REFERENCE, DIFFERENT TIMES!
Plus a peek in my sketchbook & what I've been up to 👀
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 8 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube & Twitch
I put another poll up on the Discord to see what this week’s theme should be. For the last few days we’ve been at a tie. BUT! Right before crunch time “same reference for 2, 5, 7 minutes” pulled ahead of “master studies” and so that’s what we’ll be doing!
I pulled some very random photos from my Pinterest home feed (see YouTube thumbnail above) and we will draw each a few times in a row, first for 2 minutes, then for 5 minutes, then for 7 minutes. The theory is that each time we draw we will see more and more in the photo and be able to get more and more down on the paper.
It’s a bit of an experiment and I’ll hope you’ll join for it!

THIS WEEK IN MY SKETCHBOOK
SUNDAY, JANUARY 28
I sent last week’s newsletter off a little early, before I sat down for after-dinner art time, so we’ll pick it up there this week :)
In the mood for a master study, I pulled up the Raw Pixels website and had a quick browse before settling on ‘Young Girl Sewing’ by Renoir.
Usually when I do master studies I use Neocolor IIs. This time I wanted to see if I could be quick using paint as we have our master study ART HANG PARTY! this weekend. I should have set a timer for 20 minutes, because that’s what we’ll be doing. I don’t know how long this took, but I can tell you this took longer than 20 minutes!
I used the Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints which I am just really loving lately! I started by pulling out the main colours I could see in the original and by the end had to pull out a few more.
It was my original plan to do two studies on this spread. I had my tape all down and everything, but as I was putting the paint down I had to keep moving the middle piece to the right for more and more space, haha. When I was done this one I went looking for another Renoir painting to see if I could find one that complimented it for the other side of the page, but in the end I really liked how it looked on its own. The balance of the spread felt complete so I left it like this.
MONDAY, JANUARY 29
I’m still very much in the master study mood today and did TWO! I decided to turn the timer on this time to see if I could keep them around 20 minutes with paint.
This one came in just over 20 minutes - 21:13 to be exact. It’s a Paul Signac painting called La Rochelle (1911). I put the colour down first - Kuretake paints again, and then used a black Polychromos pencil for the linework.
This one was well under 20 minutes, if you consider 16:49 well under, LOL! It’s a Ernst Ludwig Kirchner painting called Dance Hall Bellevue (1909-1910).
It kinda blows my mind that this was painted over 100 years ago - it feels so current!
TUESDAY, JANUARY 30
Not a master study but it’s very much inspired by yesterday’s Kirchner painting. I think I used almost all the same colours. It’s also very much inspired by
and her park paintings! This is the park across the street from our condo - Little Norway Park. There’s always so much activity out there, with all kinds of dogs running playing together. This is the view from our window (yes, I feel lucky to live where we do!)
I painted this from a couple of photos that I snapped a few days ago, to capture people and their dogs in different positions. I also recorded the painting process, which is up on my youtube now - watch the process here!
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 31
I didn’t do an art today and jumped right into filming, editing and posting my January Art Chat!
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 1
Before we get into ART HANG PARTY! let’s see the finally finished daisy painting!
I need to take better photos in much better light, but here she is! I softened the shadows on the petals and they feel a lot better now. More balanced.
Simon says they collection is looking lovely together!
Ok, now for ART HANG PARTY!
It was Shetland Scotland week and it was equal parts cozy and fun! We had a mix of coastal and inland landscapes, birds, sheep, ponies, coos and people.
We set the timer for 3 minutes for a slight rush but not panic, LOL. I used my Neocolor IIs and it was a perfectly scribbly time.
My favourite was the stack of sheep, which I spontaneously decided to put on the front cover of my new sketchbook!
FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 2
I had a lot of leftover paint from the background of the daisy painting so I thought I would use it cover the end papers of my next sketchbook. This is the one I drew the three sheep on the cover of yesterday, so sticking with the sheep theme I added in these cute scribbly guys using Neocolor Is. I did the front and back and it’s very cute.
There is no way this sketchbook won’t be a good one!
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 3
We had our first pop-up ART HANG PARTY! this morning and it was so nice! We got to draw LIVE with so many people who aren’t able to join us on Thursdays 🥰 Really just a very lovely time.
We were doing master studies and we set the timer waaaaay up at 20 minutes for each. The first 15 minutes felt like all the time in the world and the last 5 felt like 30 seconds - time is so weird!
I’m really happy with how my studies came out. I was brave and went for the Kuretake paints (my instinct was Neocolor II).
I assumed the Van Gogh or Monet would be my favourite when I was picking out the references (first spread), but I really love second spread, especially the Villers on the left.
At the end of the stream there was a lot of agreement that we should make weekend pop-ups a regular thing. So! tentatively and to be confirmed beforehand, we will have ART HANG PARTY! Pop-Ups on the first Saturday of the month at 10am et!
SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4
The other day
introduced me to Sari Shryack‘s still life acrylic painting process video on her (Kristin’s) recent post here. Kristin followed the process and her paintings looked so freaking cool that I just had to have a go!The first step is to roughly sketch everything in using paint. This is new for me! Usually I’d sketch in pencil, or, I would sketch on my ipad then trace it onto the canvas. I like my guides to be precise when I paint in acrylics, but that’s not Sari’s process and so that’s not what I did. I grabbed a large flat brush and some neon pink (believe it or not) and started sketching.
Then I started blocking in big blocks. No details, just blocks of colour. I started with the shadows and then colour.
Actually I lied! The first step was setting up my still life and taking a photo! You can see it below. I also made a glass palette from piece of glass from an old picture frame. I put so much tape around the edges that it’s nice and padded on the table. And I’m using my stay wet palette that I always forget I have. Let’s see how the paint holds up!
I’m going to continue working on this tomorrow. My first step will be to fix some issues I can see now, like everything is a little too close, especially down in the lower left around the cheetah and blue neocolor.
I kinda can’t wait to get back at it!
VIDEOS OF THE WEEK
So many videos this week! The vlog is from last week, maybe the week before? I was feeling pretty yucky through most of it and wasn’t going to put it out, but when I rewatched it I enjoyed it so I thought maybe you would too!
