Let’s Draw SAME REFERENCE / DIFFERENT MEDIUMS!
Plus a peek in my sketchbook & what I've been up to 👀
THURSDAY, JANUARY 2 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube
This week we’re going to have some fun drawing four different references four different times with four different mediums!
We’ll start fast and then work our way slower and slower, changing our materials with each increase of the timer.
Which means I’m giving you HOMEWORK!
Come prepared with 4 different mediums - some you can use for quick drawings, and some you can spend more time with (ie pencils, pastels, watercolour, acrylic, etc.)

SUNDAY DECEMBER 22
After I sent off last week’s post I got the sewing machine back out and made myself a new little pencil roll.
My existing tool rolls are perfectly fine, but I wanted something that I could just slip my little sketchbook and a few colour pencils into for my trip home to visit family for a couple of days.
It’s cute!

MONDAY DECEMBER 23
While waiting for the train home this morning to start the Christmas festivities I did some people sketching, testing out my new little pencil roll. It was perfect!

It was also my niece’s 9th birthday today so I joined them for her birthday lunch and we had fun drawing on the table.
Have I ever told you that my dad is a cheesecake genius? He seriously makes the best cheesecake you will ever taste.
Today he passed along his secrets to my sister and I!

TUESDAY DECEMBER 24
I spent the day with my family eating just enough, exchanging gifts and laughing our butts off playing Yahtzee. It was perfect!

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 25
Today we had some friends over for a full turkey dinner and way too much desert. It was lovely!
Since I didn’t do any art today (unless you count perfectly roasting a turkey as art) I thought perhaps it would be a good time to share the commission painting I was working on for the last two weeks.
It felt like a privilege to be asked to paint this, and I’m happy and proud that I was able to pull it off!

THURSDAY DECEMBER 26
Today was our 100th ART HANG PARTY! and it was pretty darn special.
I wanted to make today a celebration of our community, because AHP would be nothing without everyone who shows up to draw together, and that’s just what it felt like! So many of you sent photos for us to draw and messages to share and showed up, and it was so heartwarming. I did not cry but I very easily could have shed many tears of happiness!
Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that I would be someone to host something like ART HANG PARTY! That I would feel so comfortable surrounded by so many people. Putting myself out there like I’m doing and loving every minute of it.
I always believed I was a shy person who was afraid of being in front of people. And maybe I was at one time in my life, but those of you who show up for AHP week after week are so kind and encouraging that you give me the strength to do what I’m doing and to keep on going.
I love what we’re building together - all the friendships and skills that sneak up on us when it just feels like we’re having fun - it all feels pretty special!
Here’s to 100’s more ART HANG PARTIES together!
I used my favourite rainbow pencil for today’s session as I knew I needed to keep things simple. Even though we had a generous 4 minutes on the timer, I had a lot of reading to do that went along with each photo, so quick and easy was the name of the game!

FRIDAY DECEMBER 27
After dinner today I joined Sam Ashley Art for her Open Studio zoom session.
The theme was landscapes, and the way Sam structured the session was so good. We started with some quick tonal, texture, pattern and colour studies, then did a 10 minute value study, then settled into a 20 minute painting.
I think this was a such a valuable lesson, especially the value studies! I think I like them better than the paintings…
I’m pretty sure the replay will be up on Sam’s YouTube channel - I highly suggest checking it out.

SATURDAY DECEMBER 28
This afternoon I was looking for a drawing session so I had a look through the Introvert Drawing Club replays and saw there was one with Charlotte Hamilton that I haven’t done yet. Not sure how that happened!
Char explained how she breaks down complex scenes and had us do some colour blocking exercises, using only one colour at a time. I forgot how much fun it was to draw in this way.
I only did about half the session but will definitely go back to finish it.

SUNDAY DECEMBER 29
It’s been raining buckets all day so when I saw the reminder about hippo fait des trucs’s livestream just after noon today I was excited that I could join for a bit as we would usually be out on our pre-lunch dog walk.
Hippo’s theme was snowmen, which I decided to do overtop of leftover acrylic paint from Sam’s zoom on Friday. It really gave my white Neocolor II a workout!
Then after lunch I was in the mood to paint something.
Ray has his weekly Sunday Casual gig this evening and so I thought painting his guest dj, Ron Allen, might be fun. Ron’s a pretty big-deal producer and dj and one of the nicest guys!
I used acrylic paint, keeping it pretty loose and going in without a sketch, treating this more like a still life painting than a portrait.
I’ll be going to hang out at the gig later today so remind me to bring this along 😂

I didn’t film anything new this week so I’ll just leave this here for you 😘

This week theme sounds so good!!! It was lovely to be on the chat with you all for the celebration session 💖 and your commission painting is AMAZING, you have to be proud of it! Happy 2025 Melissa ✨ can’t wait to see all you will create next year, you inspire others in case you don’t know yet 🥰
The commission painting is so beautiful, I’m sure they’re gonna love it! And I really need to check Sam’s replay, I couldn’t make it that day live. Love the way the value studies turned out! That painting of your DJ friend is so cool and it’s kind of neat how the tabletop background blends with it making this cool optical illusion. It almost looks like you cut out the background of the painting and it’s a silhouette on top of your work space!
