SUNDAY MARCH 24
This was another instance of me feeling immediately compelled to paint a photo upon seeing it in a friend’s story on IG!
I started by applying acrylic inks directly to the paper using the pipet thingy and then before everything was dry (even though I should have waited) I wend in with Neocolor IIs and a few Inktense pencils.
I had just finished watching
’s latest video on values, so I actually had my phone in greyscale mode and looked through the camera between my painting and the reference photo to see if the values were matching. I worked at it a little more, lightening some areas and darkening others until the values were a pretty close match. It was really very helpful!MONDAY MARCH 25
I’ve decided to vlog this week, which means of course when I sit down to work in my sketchbook I’m distracted setting up a camera, which means of course the camera utility needs updating, which means of course I’m an hour behind in my sketchbook time! LOL!
But I did get some single-line Boston Celtics drawings in. A lot of tracksuits in this set…
TUESDAY MARCH 26
Ray signed himself up for another raid train on twitch this morning. Every time he does he says it’s the last, but then he does it again!
We had a few slight tech issues setting up so I didn’t have a lot of time to think about what I was going to do in my sketchbook. When my niece was over for the weekend a week (or so??) ago I took this random photo of our breakfast (I think the egg looked like a perfect emoji egg 🍳) so I scrolled back to it and that was decided.
I treated it like a still life painting, which I guess it is? I started loosely sketching it out with a fluorescent pink pencil, then used Kuretake paints to block in the colours, then went in with coloured pencils and Neocolor IIs to add some extra depth and interest.
I quite enjoy how this turned out!
After dinner I thought it would be fun to do another build-a-scene so I opened Pinterest and scrolled to my private “art studio” board in hopes of a little daydream. Once I started I really wasn’t feeling it. Looking at it now I think it’s ok, and I can see a bit of the dream, but I kinda gave up in the moment and moved on to…
… a replay of
’s Awkward Animal Headshots session! If I ever get tired of putting animal heads on human bodies please take all my sketchbooks away from me and never let me use a pencil ever again.
WEDNESDAY MARCH 27
This sketchbook spread was inspired by
’s “Thank God, it’s the Rightmove Roundup” post that I read during my morning scroll. The post was a humourous scroll though outlandish real estate listings, one of which was this beauty of a mansion in on Regents Park Road in Primrose Hill, London (not that that means anything to me but it sounds fancy).I used my Holbein watercolours, coloured pencils and Neocolor IIs.
I definitely have to come back to this post to draw some of the interiors!
THURSDAY MARCH 28
Here’s a quick warmup sketch I did of my friend the_machinejt on twitch. I was watching/listening to him as I waited to start ART HANG PARTY! (and as Simon waited for his pre-stream treat 👀)
And then it was time to draw vintage ads for ART HANG PARTY!
I decided to go with the black pencil / Neocolor II combo today. I’m not sure it was the right choice and don’t think these are my best drawings ever but that’s ok - it was fun!
We even had a few sneaky doodle point redeems* on twitch for a “blind contour drawing” (see the Garfield phone!) and a “switch hands” (see the last drawing). I wish we could have doodle point redeems on YouTube as that’s where the majority of viewers are these days, but it keeps things fun over on Twitch and YT people have to follow along anyway (😝)
*you collect “points” the longer you watch, and then you can redeem those points for fun things like blind contours, switch hands, add or remove time to the timer, change reference, etc!
FRIDAY MARCH 29
What did I tell you about Ray and raid trains? Well, he had signed himself up for another one today! Haha!
I rather enjoyed the random breakfast still life I did the other day so I went searching through my photo library for another random food photo and stopped as soon as I saw this jar of Disco Pickles from none other than AHP music maestro DJ Strobe!
I used acrylic paint and treated this like a proper still life painting, starting with the acid green background and sketching it out with fluorescent pink paint and a large-ish paintbrush. At one point the background of this was all fluorescent pink but it felt like too much so I went back in with white (though it’s never really just white). Surprisingly the pickles came together rather effortlessly, but the lettering on the label has about 3 or 4 layers because the struggle was real on that bit.
I’m not sure Ray will upload this set to his YouTube channel, but if he does you can find it here
SATURDAY MARCH 30
I’ve had an idea for a new profile photo for my website floating around in my head for a few days. I wanted to draw the background of my little art space and then superimpose my photo over it. I just thought it would look cool, so that’s what I did today!
I started with a single line drawing of my art shelf with my Lamy Safari fountain pen and then got out my Holbein HWC watercolours, but only used gamboge nova (yellow), quin. magenta and turquoise blue to colour it in (I’ll never stop talking about how much I love these stinking colours)
Next I took a few photos (striped shirt) but forgot about proper lighting so they don’t look great.
So then I went looking for something else and found a screenshot from my recent vlog that I thought would work. I was holding a little microphone so I cropped that out and drew my little yellow sketchbook. Not perfect but kinda cute?
Anyway, that was enough futzing about with it for today, but I like the idea!
SUNDAY MARCH 31
Ok one more! I had a suggestion on my IG post from lowercasekate that I should do a “solid, bold coloured shirt!” so here we go! Obviously I had to add strawberries.
I think of all of them I like the paint brush mustache the best! I think I’ll see if I can fix the exposure on that one and then pop it up on my website, just for fun!
As per usual, it’s Sunday afternoon and I’m ready to send this off and I haven’t played in my sketchbook, so I will share whatever I get up with you next week!
You can watch a few of the sketchbook spreads from above come to life here!
Also, do you like the colour yellow?
