THURSDAY, APRIL 11 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube & Twitch
It’s been a long time since we had a classic landscape session and I’ve decided we need to fix that this week!
The weather is starting to warm up here and I’m getting excited for plein air park times, so landscapes feels like the perfect choice. 🌳

SUNDAY MARCH 31
After dinner I felt like doing a master study, but I was also still in the mood for single line drawing so that’s what I did!
I opened up one of my art books and flipped to Helen McNicoll’s The Chintz Sofa. I’ve had this on my “to study” list since I saw the painting with my own eyes at the Art Gallery of Ontario last year but I’ve been intimidated to tackle it. Single line drawings take such pressure off a perfect representation that it made it feel doable!
I used my Lamy Safari fountain pen with black Noodlers ink and my little 3-colour Holbein HWC colour palette.
MONDAY APRIL 1
It’s the beginning of the month which means it’s time to film my monthly art chat! I’m becoming quite efficient with filming these long rambling videos, but they do cut into my art making time.
Having just reminded myself how fun it was to draw people by flipping through my One Week 100 People sketchbook, that’s what I felt like doing.
I was initially thinking of doing more single line Boston Celtics drawings but then Sophie’s profile pic in stories caught my eye so I went with it! I stuck with the single line idea and added colour with my little mini palette. To fill up the spread I looked at the next story and it was Kayleigh and a perfect pair. Sophie and Kayleigh are very high up there on my list of favourite art friends and it felt nice to draw them! (Not to exclude anyone else! Maybe this will become a little series and I’ll end up drawing everyone! Haha!)
TUESDAY APRIL 2
I hope you’re enjoying these single line drawings as much as I am because I can’t stop with them!
And then it was time to join Sophie McPike for a Scribble Brigade session! It was a patreon-only session and the theme was Vintage Stamps!
Because I’m obsessed, I stuck with my single-line and three watercolours, hah! It was definitely a challenge to do these in 3 minutes, but so fun!
WEDNESDAY APRIL 3
Need I say more?
THURSDAY APRIL 4
Two more quick portraits than on to ART HANG PARTY!
And boy oh boy was it a rocky start. I accidentally started a new livestream on YouTube instead of connecting to the one I had scheduled and so I was very confused and flustered at the beginning to trying to figure it out and make sure everyone found the right one. Thank goodness our little AHP community is so supportive 🥰 But oof! Let’s not do that again, k??
Anyway, it was Movie Posters But Dogs week!
In an effort to try to relax and loosen up (more for me than anything!) we started with some 30-second single-line blind-contours
And then we settled in for what turned out to be a super-challenging session. I started the timer at 4 minutes but after the first two upped it to 5.
FRIDAY APRIL 5
I decided to add all these single line portraits to my website and as I was scanning and cropping them I thought maybe I should draw myself to use as an updated profile pic on IG, so I did. I started with the right side one because it scans flatter but it turned out decidedly not me, so I tried again on the left side and I like it a little better so that’s the winner.
My brother and his family are in Monterey this week and he’s been sending all kinds of photos from the aquarium, so I made this quick oil pastel drawing while I was waiting for Ray to come home with dinner:
And then I asked my friend if she wanted a portrait done so here she is with her bf!
SATURDAY APRIL 6
It was our weekend pop-up ART HANG PARTY!
I tried to gather advice on how to tackle night scenes on the various socials from people before the stream started but I take it by the extreme lack of response that many people - not just AHP people who voted on the theme - have a fear of night scenes!
The only thing I could think of was treat it a bit like negative space, which, I think, really helped!
I decided to use oil pastels, because if something is going to be challenging it might as well also be fun, right?
We started with a few single-line blind contours again, to get ourselves loose and ready:
Then we set the timer at 20 minutes, giving plenty of time to puzzle out what the heck to do LOL. But all in all everyone did so well!
The hardest one for me was the last one. That sky just did me in. I probably should have ignored it and just did it all black like the others, but it was so dramatic in the photo that I felt I needed to try. I said during the stream that maybe we need to do a clouds theme soon!
Tackling such a challenging topic like night scenes, something that seems so daunting every time I think about it, was actually pretty doable doing it alongside other people. Drawing in community is magic!
And of course what would a day be without a few more single line portraits?
SUNDAY APRIL 7
After lunch I was on the verge of falling asleep on the couch when my brain flicked over to my sketchbook and I was instantly awake! I thought perhaps I could close out the week the same way I opened it - with a single-line master study!
This is EH Varley’s “Sunflowers”, one of the Group of Seven artists.
AND THEN! Who would have thought at the beginning of the week when temps were below zero and we were experiencing buckets of rain and 80km/hr winds that we would be able to sit outside in the park and enjoy some sunshine!
I packed up my art supplies and we headed to the park across the street. I did a few quick drawings in my sketchbook. No masterpieces but so nice nonetheless!
Would you believe that I actually forgot I filmed this video until I was proofreading this post? Hah!
Anyway, it’s a chatty look at all the art I made last month 👀

Your dog movie posters and night scenes turned out SO good- and yes, even the last one which was super hard! Love the profile pic single line drawings they’re so cool. And I might need to sketch Simon in his sunglasses 🕶️
