THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube
I’ve been hoping this theme would be chosen from the theme pot sooner rather than later!
How it will work is that we will see our reference photo on screen for a period of time, but instead of just drawing or painting it like we usually do, we are going to sketch it and write out colour notes using just a pencil or pen, no colour, just lines and shapes and words. Then I will remove the reference photo and we will draw or paint the landscape from our notes!
A very big experimental theme for sure, but one I’m really looking forward to!

A quick update from last week, as seems to be the way!
I actually already forgot I said I would participate in the #3MaterialsSunday challenge even though that was just last week, so I pulled up the a suggested replay from
and drew some ducks using a yellow paint stick, blue Woody and 14B pencil.MONDAY SEPTEMBER 9
Looking through my google photos app for inspiration of what to draw this evening, the cover of a shared family album filled with old photo scans caught my eye.
I love drawing old family photos, especially ones from scans or photos of photos. Somehow they are easier to draw than drawing from a photo?
I really think I caught likenesses here! Especially my aunt Ruthe and grandma in the bottom left 🥰

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 10
I was watching Portrait Artist of the Year as I do when Ray asked me what portrait I would submit to the show. Thinking about all the self portraits I’ve done I didn’t really have one I’d be happy enough with (maybe the recent watercolour one?). So then I thought about all the other recent paintings I’ve done and had the idea that I would do a self portrait in the style of a still life.
The more painterly style feels like something the PAOTY judges would appreciate and I love it when Kate Bryan says “it’s a little jewel of a painting” so I went small, haha.
I’m not saying this would make the cut by any means, but it was fun to treat my face like I would treat an object in a still life. I recorded the full process so I’ll put it in a vlog or something (I kinda see how I did it LOL!)
Then I joined Sophie McPike for a Scribble Brigade session which focused on more minimalistic landscapes.
I’m really enjoying working over these bright backgrounds with black. Today I went with the Faber-Castell 14B pencil.

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 11
We went to a Blue Jays game today! I decided to take my little sketchbook with a few Inktense pencils along, which I haven’t done before.
These are the sketches I did while waiting for the game to start with nobody seated around us.
And these are the ones I tried to do when there were people around, LOL!

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 12
Today was PARALYMPIC GOLD at ART HANG PARTY!
I opened up my supply choice to the chat, letting them decide between a rainbow pencil (a Camel rainbow pencil for those looking for the perfect one), and my graveyard of tiny coloured pencils.
They went with the rainbow pencil and I’m glad they did! It’s been a long while since I’ve drawn with it. I think I’m afraid to use it up before I can get my hands on a new one.
(BRB going down a rabbit hole on where to buy this pencil in Canada, stumbling upon the Camel Japan website trying to figure out if I should become an importer of said pencil and the adorably cute half-size wooden mechanical pencil because omg seriously thinking about it)
I kept feeling like we were zooming through the images, so much so that we skipped the mid-way show and tell break and just kept going. The timer was set at 3 minutes for all but the last 4, which we were 2 minutes. Oh, we did do one 5 minute - the three guys in the wheelchairs.
This session was great fun!

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 13
I thought it would be cute to make some little art gifts for my IRL drawing meetup with
and Stephanie Lucas tomorrow!I made two strawberry block prints that I forgot to take a photo of and this cute single-line portrait of Char and Piper! I could not find a photo of Stephanie…
Then it was the super-anticipatory Weirdo Drawing Club session with
’s patreon group! We, her patrons, were responsible for picking the reference photos for this session and Deb had NO IDEA what she would be drawing. It was so much fun! It was weird! It was slightly terrifying!

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 14
I don’t even know what to say about today except it was great!
I hopped on my bike and pedalled my way over to Sunnyside Beach to meet up with Stephanie Lucas and
! As I was getting closer I saw a Char pop out of a butterfly garden! We walked to our meeting spot together, exchanged art gifts and did quick drawings of each other while we waited for Steph to arrive!
Here’s Steph!
We sat here for a bit to draw the volleyball players and Char almost got bonked in the head!
There was a very handsome seagull that agreed to pose for me. As soon as I was done drawing him he flew away. So kind!
Then we walked back to the butterfly garden and did a 10 minute drawing.
We had to do a throwdown!
We walked a little farther to an area with big beautiful willow trees and sat at picnic table for a couple of minutes for more chats and drawing.
All of a sudden it was time to go. Char was meeting up with her daughter, Steph was heading to the Distillery District and I was signed up for an Ohn Mar Win painting tutorial. Two hours was NOT long enough!
We have already decided on our next meetup location, and I can’t wait!
Speaking of Ohn Mar’s painting tutorial, I was an hour late because time zones. I missed the warm-ups, but I caught the meat of the session, which was on loose watercolours with essential ink.
Must practice more of this!

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 15
The butterfly garden from yesterday was too pretty not to paint in my homemade watercolour sketchbook.

I love your 3-material ducks! My favorite thing is your self portraits! The colors and painterly textures are STUNNING. I think one from a few weeks ago caught my eye but I forgot to leave a comment. If you ever do a demo on acryla gouache portraits let me know!
