THIS WEEK IN MY SKETCHBOOK
Friday, October 13
Jet lag is real. If you remember my recap post you’ll know that we got home last Thursday evening. Actually, is 10pm still evening? Anyway, it was late. We were mauled by cats, slobbered over by the dog, and were not the least bit ready for bed.
But that was Thursday and we’re talking Friday here, so…
It was Simon’s 10TH BIRTHDAY! I can’t believe the boy is ten years old. He’s still as goofy, if not goofier, then when he was two. I made him a peanut butter apple birthday cake as I do every year and he gobbled it up as he does every year. What a special little goober he is.
I did not do any art this day.
Saturday, October 14
I have no memory of this day. Have I mentioned jet lag?
Sunday, October 15
I mustered up the energy to actually open my sketchbook today and decided to an art prompt that Sophie McPike posted on her Patreon. It was all about a fun way to come up with a colour palette, where you make a pattern and then fill in the colours, making sure that you don’t have the same colour up against itself. Something like that anyway.
I decided take inspiration from a wave pattern I saw on a poster when we first landed in Tokyo, and then fill it in using all my new supplies.
Once you have the pattern filled in, you make a little window so you can only see a small portion, and then that becomes a nice limited colour palette! See, fun!

I was searching through my trip photos for what I could add to my sketchbook from our first day, and decided to start with some cute characters and things I snapped on our walk from the subway station to the hotel.
There are so many cute things all over Tokyo! If I allowed myself to snap them all we never would have got anywhere, LOL
Then I did this mostly inky street scene from Shibuya. I have a feeling there will be many spreads like this throughout the sketchbook! I’ll try to vary the techniques though, to keep it interesting for myself.
Tuesday, October 17
Tuesday evening we were back for ART DISCO! I wanted to paint the Japanese Garden at Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden - I was craving green! - so I had a look through Ray’s photos and found the perfect reference.
I used my new HWC watercolours as the base, mostly the gamboge nova, quinacridone magenta, and turquoise blue, with maybe a touch of neutral tint for the darker shade. The greens came out so vibrant! Oh, and some of the fluorescent yellow Lumi Color paint for those bright acid tones.
Then I added on the usual coloured pencils and wax pastels for all the juicy bits.
I’m sure the replay will be up on Ray’s YouTube channel soon, if you’d like to check it out!
Wednesday, October 18
Starting to feel a little back to normal, though sleep is still a bit of a challenge. I’ll almost be asleep, and then something in brain flicks on and I’m wide awake for hours. Fun times.
Anyway, I wanted to play with the fountain pen ink I brought back, so here we are. An ice cream from 7-11, probably one of the best cans of cocktail I tried, also from 7-11, and a cute cat from a welcome banner at the airport. I also used the 100¥ calligraphy brush I picked up at Daiso which give very little control.
And then I got out the watercolours and tried my hand at painting my first meal, Karaage, or fried chicken.
Honestly this (the painting) didn’t look like much (the chicken was amazing!) with the initial paint layer. It was terrible, actually! But then I added in some brown coloured pencil, and a little black, really pushing the shadows, and it turned out looking like fried chicken!
The lesson? Don’t give up. Push the shadows. Sometimes it’s ok to take a sleeping pill. The end.

ART HANG PARTY! day!
If I’m being honest, I was a little nervous as I waited to press the “go live” button. But as soon as I did and started blathering to the camera, people started saying hi in the chat and all was right with the world.
I had gathered 28 photos of the Japan trip - some from mine and some from Ray’s. We started with some quick 1-minute food drawings, then increased the timer slightly to 2 minutes, then finished off with 3 minutes.
It was really fun to talk about the trip and how cool Tokyo is, and answer questions that people had.
I used only my Japanese art supplies for this week, plus one black prismacolor.
Friday, October 20
One of the funniest moments of our trip was when our friend WahooRecords (his Twitch handle) tea was brought out in this plastic yellow elephant! Not five minutes earlier Udasoul ordered the same thing and it was delivered in a proper teapot 🤣
(Note: they are much more handsome than represented here!)
I used the blue and magenta inks for the outlines (first sketched in pencil), and then added light washes of watercolour.
Saturday, October 21
I had recently watched Mike Dutton’s latest Pedal & Paint video (some of my fav YouTube videos ever!), where he did some inky sketches on a big roll of paper, and was very much inspired to try my hand at it.
TRY. LOL. This is not entirely successful, but it’s not bad for a first try.
Mid-afternoon we gathered up the picnic blankets and headed to the park across the street to chill in the cozy Fall sun.
I decided to take out my new HWC watercolours, coloured pencils and wax pastels to try to capture the just-now-starting to change colours of the trees.
Sunday, October 22
I stepped waaaay outside of my comfort zone and headed over to Ontario Place to join a group of plein air artists who were gathering to draw attention to the fact that the Ontario province has plans to take down over 1500 trees in the area (not to mention leasing the land to a private company for 95 years to build a spa that nobody asked for).
It was so nice to paint alongside other artists, have a peek at their paintings, and feel the camaraderie that filled the air!
Here’s a little video!
