THURSDAY, MARCH 14 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube & Twitch
I’ve been in a people drawing mood lately and am pretty sure I’m going to do the #oneweek100people challenge this week coming so I pulled rank this week on the theme, but not totally - I put a poll up on the discord channel to see what the sub-theme would be:
I’m sure we will get to the other two at some point, but for this week we’ll be drawing hairstyles through the ages! I did my best to pull a good variety starting from Ancient Greece all the way through to today - should be a fun one!

SUNDAY MARCH 3
A bit of catch-up from last Sunday before we get into this week!
The Boston Celtics absolutely destroyed the Golden State Warriors in a Sunday afternoon game ONE HUNDRED AND FORTY to 88. You heard me! It was a joy to watch and got me in the mood to do another #celticsdrip spread in my sketchbook.
I did the outlines as single line (not blind) drawings using my Sailor Fude fountain pen and then added colour with Inktense paints.
MONDAY MARCH 4
I has been a long time since I used only colour pencil for an illustration (if you don’t count the acrylic paint in the background), but it felt like it was the right choice for today.
I was in the mood to draw a person but when Pinterest didn’t offer up anything enticing I opened cupofjo.com and quickly settled on this photo of Sohla!
TUESDAY MARCH 5
We did another raid train livestream on twitch this morning. It’s becoming a regular thing to do on Tuesday morning, despite Ray grumbling about it even though he’s the one who signs up for them, haha!
It was at 10:00am, so not my usual max-creative time. I decided to keep it loose and do a colour pencil drawing of a photo I took in Akihabara, Tokyo. I guess my coloured pencils are talking to me this week!
You can catch the replay here!
Also my niece came over because she is getting her first tattoo this evening!
She likes to draw but says she never knows what to draw, so before we had to head out I thought I would show her to joys of single-line drawings!
Then we went to Completo for the most amazing tacos. Seriously, just look at this beauty! If you’re ever in Toronto you must go. It’s a tiny little takeout place with like 5 stools to sit at. They have other items on the menu but there’s no need to look at them. Just order the veggie tacos, medium spicy. Trust me.
And then it was tattoo time!
I packed my little “people-from-life” sketchbook and some Inktense pencils because I knew I would have about 2 hours to kill.
I love the simplicity of this first drawing:
And I really wish I didn’t add the blue to this one. I first started with shadows under the shelf and hated it, so I coloured in the whole wall, which is better but not as good as if I just left it without. Ah well! Still captures the scene.
WEDNESDAY MARCH 6
A little while ago I decided it would be a good idea to swatch every single paint colour I own. Why? NO IDEA. But I have this stack of paint swatches sitting on my shelf waiting for something to be done with them.
My niece curiously picked them up and then started putting them in colour order, like that game you can play on your phone, but in real life!
This, by the way, is maybe not even half of the swatches:
It was a short and sweet visit with my niece - never long enough but always nice!
After dinner I pulled up Sophie McPike’s Scribble Brigade replay from yesterday (patreon only session). This month’s theme is vintage animation backgrounds, which is pretty cool. Sophie studied animation and has a background in doing backgrounds so her knowledge is pretty awesome!
I didn’t finish the full stream because I wasn’t really feeling the oil pastels, so I’ll go back to do the rest with something else another day (I’m feeling a monochromatic Moonglow situation).
THURSDAY MARCH 7
Before ART HANG PARTY! I finished up the Scribble Brigade session from yesterday, going forth with my plan to use Daniel Smith’s Moonglow as my sole material.
And then it was ART HANG PARTY! time!
This week’s theme was Build A Café / a choose your own adventure experiment.
Everyone contributed to the Pinterest reference board and I took the images and put them in a sort of order that we could draw piece by piece to build out a scene, starting with what we were having to drink, then eat, who we were sitting with, the barista, etc. I had two options for each so we took little votes in the chat to collectively decide!
Like all our experimental sessions IT WAS SO MUCH FUN!
Here’s an example of how a scene came together piece by piece:
And here are the café scenes I drew! It’s cool because everyone’s was different, but all the pieces were there!
I used my Inktense pencils, sometimes wet, sometimes dry.
Please do me a favour and draw along to the replay!
FRIDAY MARCH 8
It would appear that drawing old family photos is becoming my go-to thing to draw when I don’t know what to draw, and I’m more than ok with that.
I don’t think I did well on most of the likenesses here, but I do think I’ve caught their vibes.
I think my dad on the GT snow racer is one of the best things I’ve ever drawn in my entire life, LOL!
After dinner I pulled up another #CelticsDrip post on IG and did some single line drawings with inktense paints. I am really enjoying these!
I’m going to be doing the #OneWeek100People challenge that runs March 11 - 15 next week and think I might do most of them like this! Well, maybe a combo of this style and the style of old family photos above. We’ll see! Are you going to be doing that challenge?
SATURDAY MARCH 9
I felt like having a play in my big sketchbook this evening with thoughts of flowers. I’m not sure it went exactly as planned. LOL
I started by dropping acrylic ink directly on the left page and smooshing them around. Then I closed the sketchbook so the colours would transfer onto the right page, which turned into a big tie-died mess. I decided to go with it, and started drawing out negative space flowers and leaves on the right side with Neocolor I (breaking the crayon into 3 pieces at one point 🫠).
I tried the same on the left, but with a cornflower blue heavy acrylic paint. It wasn’t working out, so I painted over that with neon pink acrylic, then tried making a negative space-ish folk arty flower. Tried being the operative word. I ended up squeezing some blue, teal and light pink acrylic over that and just loosely pushed it around and this is where I left it. Maybe I’ll go back and add a flower, but probably not.
SUNDAY MARCH 10
I wanted to do some single line ink and wash drawing but didn’t want to do another #Celticsdrip spread (people will come tomorrow with the #oneweek100people challenge!) so I opened Pinterest and was presented with a cupcake so that was decided.
Being reminded about my paint swatches by my niece prompted me to start putting them in order - here’s part one of organizing them into colour groups.
ALSO! I am now just 13 11 subscribers away from proper monetization on YouTube and getting those pennies to start rolling in! If by chance you aren’t following me over there I would really appreciate if you could! https://www.youtube.com/@melissamartinart
