This week’s session is all about being fast and loose as we draw a whole bunch of figures!
I have prepared a colour palette as I usually do (will be posted on IG on Wednesday) but honestly for this week I say just grab your favourite drawing tool, or a drawing tool you want to get to know better. We’ll be drawing a lot of bodies in a short period of time!

MONDAY APRIL 15
It was so nice out this afternoon! Simon had a grooming appointment so I decided that I would wait for him outside at the Toronto Music Garden park instead of at home, so I packed up some art supplies and out I went.
There were a lot of people out enjoying the sun, so I stopped at the first empty bench I saw and did a pretty rough watercolour painting of one of my favourite willow trees. It’s just starting to bud and is a very fun chartreuse colour right now!
Then I packed up and walked a little further to another spot and drew some people in my “people from life” sketchbook.
And finally as I was walking to find another spot I spotted our acquaintance Captain Ron and his cute little truck on the other side of the marina, so I sat down with my Neocolor IIs and coloured over some acrylic paint splodges.
What a lovely way to spend an hour! I definitely need to do this more, knowing I don’t need to wait for Ray to join me (though it is nice to have company).
Here are some cute photos:
TUESDAY APRIL 16
I decided to take a peek inside my stay-wet palette to see how my acrylics were doing in there as it had been a couple of weeks since I checked on it. The majority of the paints were all good, still perfectly usable as if I had just squeezed them from the tube, but for some reason the Sennelier acrylics were all moldy! I only have three of them - a yellow, blue and green - and they were all covered in mold! But all my other paints - liquitex, Amsterdam, art-store brand - were fine. So weird!
Marie Louise suggested that I spray the palette with a solution of distilled water, vegetable glycerin and surgical spirit, so I’ll see if I can put that together.
Anyway, when I was looking at the palette I swear it told me that it was time to paint a self portrait, so I listened and here we are. I based it off a photo I took of my fresh new haircut and treated it like a still life painting, meaning I didn’t sketch with a pencil first and just went straight in with paint.
I’m really pretty happy with it! I think my mouth is in a weird spot but it kinda looks like I’m smirking? And who knew you could get such rich browns with orange and red and blue!
Later in the evening it was time for a Scribble Brigade session with Sophie McPike. The theme was vintage stamps again and I went single-line/3 colour again because it’s so much fun!
WEDNESDAY APRIL 17
I did a bit of furniture rearranging after dinner, moving a shelf from the office to my little art area (aka dining area) to give me more space to spread out all my supplies. But now that I have the space I actually don’t know how I want to arrange things! I guess I’ll take my time and figure it out.
Anyway, after that I opened Pinterest with thoughts of drawing people and saw a photo of some old ladies on a teeter-totter that looked fun, which set the theme for this spread. Fast and silly!
THURSDAY APRIL 18
It was CAKE WEEK at ART HANG PARTY!
We were drawing cakes from AHP pal Andrea’s Leche con pan Mexico, a pastry business she started up with her family! You can find them on Instagram here: https://www.instagram.com/lecheconpanmexico
We started with some quick 30 second single line blind contours - always fun!
Then we settled in to 3 minutes for the rest.
I decided to pull out my Sai Akashiya watercolour brush markers, which I pretty much instantly regretted. For whatever reason I’m so uncomfortable with markers! Probably because I never use them.
After we took a show and tell break I decided to switch to my rainbow pencil, which felt much better!
FRIDAY APRIL 19
Deb (aka
) posted a new Let’s Draw Some Weird Things video on YouTube. As I was watching eating dinner I thought it would be a good warmup for tomorrow’s live drawing session! So after I finished the dishes I rewound the video and had a fun time drawing along. As I was drawing the first one I was thinking about the best drawing advice I’ve ever heard: draw the big shapes first. Without doing that those legs would have been a nightmare to draw! (I did not follow the advice on the fur-beef and I can totally tell the difference).
Anyway - FUN!
I also moved all my completed sketchbooks to the new(ly moved) shelf. Super satisfying!
SATURDAY APRIL 20
Oh! My! Goodness! What an absolutely fun time! This morning was our LIVE DRAWING SESSION that I cohosted with Deb!
We drew weird things. But we also got to talk with each other and see each other and laugh together! It was magical!
Thank you everyone who came to draw with us! We’ll be splitting the replay across our YouTube channels (I’ll post the first half, Deb will post the second half) so I’ll be sure to share the links when they’re up for those who weren’t able to make it. (Should be sometime in the next week.)
I’m definitely going to make sure we do this again.
I don’t like leaving a spread half-finished, so here’s some old family photos:
SUNDAY APRIL 21
A couple single line drawings of Andrea from ART HANG PARTY!
I decided to make some little watercolour palettes to throw in my plein air pouch using my 3 Holbein HWC favs. As I was digging them out I saw a little 3-colour Turners watercolour set I picked up in Tokyo (for $3.30CAD!) and since I had another little container I made another little travel set.
Here’s what their colour wheels look like!
And speaking of watercolour, here’s a fast little landscape I did using my fuller HWC watercolour set, Prismacolor and Neocolor IIs.
This was based off a photo that Jessica posted on IG earlier as a bit of practice for hopefully taking my kit outside for some more plein air time this week 🤞
I found myself with some time while waiting for Simon’s grooming appointment to finish up so I packed up some art supplies and took myself for a little plein air time on Monday afternoon!
I also organized my blue paint swatches into colour order! So satisfying!
You can watch me organize them all into colour groups here, and all the yellows here.
