THURSDAY, JANUARY 25 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube & Twitch
When I asked if anyone had any ideas for this week’s theme towards the end of the stream last week, our youngest party goer piped up and enthusiastically made a suggestion. She also not-so-casually mentioned it would be her 11th birthday a few days later and that drawing her favourite thing (dragons) would be very cool. It didn’t take long for the rest of folks to second (and third and forth) her suggestion, so here we are! Drawing dragons!

THIS WEEK IN MY SKETCHBOOK
MONDAY, JANUARY 15
Is anyone else at all alarmed at the rate in which with month is zooming by?
On the weekend I watched a Melanie Chadwick domestika course on food illustration. I love watching Melanie paint and draw, especially landscapes. I’ve been really interested in her illustration work also, so when I remembered she had this course I went for it and basically binge-watched it all at once.
Her process is so interesting! I can’t wait to actually follow along with the course when I have a little more room in my work schedule, but in the meantime I was really in the mood to draw food!
I had just dug out and refilled my Lamy Safari fountain pen so that was my tool of choice. I opened Pinterest and searched “fruit” and just started drawing. I did single-line contours, without lifting the pen off the paper. Not blind though, I was looking down at the paper occasionally. It was really meditative! Then I decided to grab my Inktense paints and just loosen add some colour.
I really, really like how these came out!
TUESDAY, JANUARY 16
I’ve started saving some Celtics “drip” posts on Instagram with the thought of drawing them when I’m in a people drawing mood. Today was such a day! Still using the Lamy and Inktense, I started with the single-line contours and then added the colour.
I think I’m going to have to invest in some actually bulletproof/waterproof black in though, because the Noodlers one that “says” it’s bulletproof isn’t actually. I even went back to yesterday’s spread to do a test and it bled. Do you have any recommendations??
WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 17
I did some more work on the daisy painting this evening, filling in the darkest shadows and then adding some mid tones. I don’t know why I feel like I’m kinda struggling with this one, but I know I’ll get there!
I do like how the petals are looking, though I think I should soften the transition between the darks and lights a bit.
I’ll let it sit for a few days and go back at it with fresh eyes (and fresh shoulder! Painting large is pretty physical)
THURSDAY, JANUARY 18
It was MORE CATS week at ART HANG PARTY!
I was really looking forward to this session. Not only to draw more cats, but to draw cats and people! I’ve drawn a few old ladies with their cats recently and had a lot of fun with them, so why not do a lot more!
I was less than inspired by the colour palette though. Most of the photos were black and white or sepia or kinda muted. The photos were greats. The colours, not so much. So I went looking through my sketchbooks for some inspiration and settled on this: a black pencil and 3 Neocolor IIs (salmon, sky blue and light cobalt blue hue)
I love how these came out! Like cute little spot illustrations from a magazine that should hire me, LOL!
FRIDAY, JANUARY 19
I started feeling a little run down as the day went on, so after some soup and a little nap I pulled up Sophie’s Scribble Brigade that I missed earlier this week and sat on the couch with my ipad and struggled through an hour of 1-minute figure drawings.
They look a lot better collages together like this then when I was actually drawing them individually, LOL
SATURDAY, JANUARY 20
Ray has been under the weather for a while and I’ve been lucky enough to keep whatever it is (not covid) at bay. Until last night that is. I had a terrible, hot, achy, stuffy sleep.
So I was expecting to spend the majority of the day napping on the couch. That happened, but I also did a lot more art than I would have thought.
Like this single line drawing of my Holbein watercolours that I got in Japan (you can see my full haul here!)
I did spend the afternoon on couch snoozing in and out of Seinfeld episodes with Simon snuggled at my feet 🥰
After dinner I opened my sketchbook to this spread I prepped with a gesso/acrylic paint mixture left over from my daisy painting and searched my photos for photos of “blue sky”. I found one from when we had a family bbq at my aunt and uncle’s farm in the summer and settled on that.
I used gouache and then went in coloured pencils and just a few Neocolor IIs.
And then, after another Seinfeld episode I decided to go back to see which Scribble Brigades I needed to catch up on and thought since I am feeling under the weather, the “all is blue” session was perfect.
SUNDAY, JANUARY 21
I felt like I should do some more work on the daisy painting. It’s been sitting on the floor where I can see it from the couch. Casually looking at it now and then helped me figure out how I wanted to finish off the petals. Mainly that the shadow transitions needed softening and some of the darkest bits needed lightening slightly.
I also added the centres with just a bit of depth.
I popped up to the art shop to pick up a background colour - cobalt blue ultramarine, and started adding that in. It’s slightly transparent so I’ll need to do layers, which is fine, but I’m really liking how the flowers are popping off it! I think my first instinct of a fully blue background was right for this piece.
I’m leaving it here for today, but I’m happy with how it’s shaping up!
VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Back with another studio vlog this week. I do quite enjoy putting these together. Filming while I’m home alone makes me feel like I’m not alone, if that makes sense? Kind of like I’m hanging out with a friend (aka you!).
This is basically everything you just read above, but in video form.
