THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 16 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube & Twitch
We had a lot of fun with Fashion Week, and one reference in particular was very reminiscent of David Bowie, which got the chat thinking how much fun it would be to do a week dedicated to the icon, and so it was decided!
I honestly don’t know too much about David Bowie myself, so I’m getting some help from Kayleigh on pulling the references together (always greatly appreciated!). Should be an interesting one!

THIS WEEK IN MY SKETCHBOOK
Monday, November 6
I filled another day in my Japan Sketchbook!
I started with the people walking across a too-packed bridge, regretted adding the coloured pencil buildings, then did the funny gorilla dude that was on a sign for a sushi restaurant we were planning on going to with our Osaka friends (the place had an hour wait so we went somewhere else)

Then I sketched out Ray and his fellow DJs who played at House Bar Muse. I followed the same “draw the shapes, not the people” technique. I wish I had started a little to the left so Ray’s face wasn’t in the gutter, but I kinda like that Mocca is squeezed onto the page, just as she was in the photo.
I really think I caught each of their likenesses here!

I was planning on going over to my friend Susie’s new apartment on Wednesday, so for Art Disco I thought it’d be nice to paint her a housewarming gift.
She loves sunflowers, so that decision was made. Then I thought it’d be cool to do one in the style of my big strawberry painting! I sketched it out on my ipad, printed it out to scale (12x12) and traced it on a canvas board I had laying around that I had pre-painted with a peachy colour ages ago.
It was an ambitious plan to paint a 12x12 inch painting during a 2-hour livestream, while also modding and chatting with viewers, but I did it! 💪
I think it’s quite possible that a few more of these pieces will appear over the next little while and a small collection will start to build.

How good does it look with the Strawberry Maniac painting?
Wednesday, November 8
I was meeting Susie by her old condo before we headed over to her new one. I walked the 30 minutes from my place, then walked 30 more trying to find the perfect coffee shop to sit in and wait for her. I planned time to sit and sketch, but I didn’t think it would take so long to find a coffee shop! I passed a bunch, popped my head in to check the vibe, available seating, etc.
None felt right, until I went into Jimmy’s Coffee on Ossington. There was seating in the back that had a view of the espresso bar, and also other patrons who were deep in conversation or working away on their laptops. Perfect for sneaky sketching!

I was originally sitting at the last table on the right, where the two guys are sittings. Then I had to use the washroom so I found a new spot for a new perspective.
Susie showed up then so that’s all the drawing for the day. We walked around a mall for a bit (I bought 2 shirts!), then to her new place where I was greeted with pee on my socks from my god-doggy Prince 🥰, then out for Korean BBQ for dinner (my first time!), then I took the train home. We had plans for art-time after diner, but the weather was terrible - wet and stupid windy - so we’ll have to get together again soon for some.

I loved drawing in the café so much! If you’d like to sponsor a solo-coffee art date for me you can do so here

Fashion Week was a lot of fun at ART HANG PARTY! this week! We had a few new people join us again, which is awesome! It feels like our little community is growing a little more each week ☺️
I was debating what materials I was going to use before the stream, as I do. Brush pen and a few coloured pencils were the front runner, until I saw my new Camel multicoloured pencil I picked up in Tokyo.
I love this pencil so much! I think the drawings look so cool all multi-coloured and lined up, like a 70’s rock band from the inside of a record sleeve or something!
We started out with the timer set for 2 minutes for the first few, then upped to 3 minutes which felt more comfortable for getting all the details in.
You can catch the replay on YouTube here, along with all the other past ART HANG PARTY! streams.

Friday, November 10
I had a dream that I was using oil pastels in my sketchbook, and so I knew when it was time to sit down after dinner that oil pastels had to be on the menu.
Still on the quest to fill my Tokyo sketchbook, I scanned through Ray’s trip photos looking for a reference from the Japanese Garden we visited on our last day.
I really like this photo, that had a nice reflection on the water and a ton of greens. I don’t have that many green oil pastels, so it’s fun to see what others colours can work in place to still capture the essence of the scene but also make it a little more interesting. Hurray for blues and pinks and purples!

Saturday, November 11
I have been meaning to catch up on Sophie McPike’s Scribble Brigade livestream for a couple of weeks, so after breakfast and with a fresh cup of coffee I pulled up her Animals in Classic Art session, decided on a limited colour palette and had a lovely time drawing with her.
It’s because of Sophie that ART HANG PARTY! exists. We used to do art hangs on her discord channel every week. They were a lot of fun because it was more like a video chat than a one-way livestream. (Makes me think that we should do a discord art hang video chat session soon!)
I never make it to the live Scribble Brigades because they mostly happen on Tuesday evenings, when we have our Art Disco streams. But I think we’ll be moving those back to Saturdays for the next while, so win/win!
Anyway, here’s what I drew. I really enjoy this colour palette!

After lunch I pulled out my Tokyo sketchbook and filled a couple quick spreads. This first one is the illustration from a box of treats we were gifted.
And these are hand-drawn signs that were taped to a restaurant’s doors. I thought the illustrations were cute!
And a quick single-line drawing of Ray at his CDJs using the multi-coloured pencil.
Sunday, November 12
I started my day by finishing off the Scribble Brigade livestream from yesterday with these adorable cat and dog. The timer was set for 10 minutes for each of these, but I ended a few minutes on each because I was happy with how they were looking and I didn’t want to ruin them, haha.
And then! AND THEN!! I was so very generously gifted a free month subscription to
from ! Beth often mentions ART HANG PARTY! in her weekly drawing roundup post, which is so so nice, but this was totally unexpected! (Thank you again if you’re reading this Beth! 🤗💖✨)It was fun looking through the drawing session replays and deciding on which would be my first. I can’t wait to get into all of them - there are so many good themes! - but “The Kids from Beaver High ‘62” really called my name.
Beth had pages of yearbook photos of first graders to fourth graders, the janitor staff and lunch ladies, and set a timer for 5 minutes per row.
I had a few spreads pre-painted with pastel watercolours that I was reserving for painting in the park this afternoon, but it wasn’t looking like that was going to happen, so I decided to use it for this session.
I used washy tape to divide up the pages into a grid and grabbed two inktense pencils and a waterbrush - the teal and the outliner (I have learned the outliner is actually waterproof!)
I loved listening to all the participants on the replay talking about how they were struggling with drawing the kids, not that they were actually struggling, but more how the others were offering helpful tips and suggestions for overcoming or flat out ignoring the trouble spots.
I didn’t stick it out for the full session because Simon needed a walk, but I did get through the first and second graders, who look more like 55 to 65 year olds, LOL!
I can’t wait to dig into more Introvert Drawing Club sessions!
VIDEO OF THE WEEK
Since I’m ending the week on a big drawing session kick (ART HANG PARTY! Scribble Brigade, Introvert Drawing Club, etc.), and because I didn’t film anything new this week, I thought it’d be fun to revisit my first art hang sketchbook tour, which has contributions from Sophie and others!
I hope you enjoy it!
🤗💖✨
Ok, that’s it for me!
See you Thursday at ART HANG PARTY!
Thank you so much for sharing your lovely yearbook kids! That’s one of my favorite sessions and a perfect prelude the Fast Faces one that’s happening Saturday!
