THURSDAY, MARCH 7 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube & Twitch
Our friend and creative genius
- or Peachy to those that know and love her - had a really fun idea over on the AHP discord:Might be a bit complex, but I was thinking... There are so many things to do with a cafe/coffee shop. Maybe we could do a real-time choose-your-own-adventure thing as a group. For example, what are we ordering from the cafe? Coffee, or tea? We put it to a very quick vote in the comments, and whatever we've chosen to "order" is what our prompt image is for that part. Then, let's say, if we are staying for a bit of a snack too, are we ordering something sweet (pastry, cake, etc) or are we feeling more savoury today (sandwich, bagel, quiche, etc)... Could be fun!
So that’s what we’re going to do!
I love the sessions where we experiment so much - this is going to be one you don’t want to miss!

MONDAY FEBRUARY 26
My hand is still a little sore today but feeling a lot better! I still can’t really use a pencil, but paintbrushes are ok. Seems weird, I know, but I think it’s the intensity of the grip.
With that, I thought I would work on some backgrounds for the picturebook. They don’t look like much, but as a reminder I’m going to scan these in and add all kinds of layers and things digitally. And probably some scribbles. They need scribbles!
If the fact that I’m working a picturebook is new info, it’s a personal project that I’ve been putting off for years! I talk a little more about it in my vlog from last week.
Then I thought I would see how drawing on my ipad would feel. I had to hold the pencil really funny but it was doable.
When I was at the grocery store earlier in the day I was randomly taken by the designs of the canned fish on the shelf in the Asian food section. They are not anything I would ever buy, let alone eat (nothing from the sea and nothing white and creamy [namely mayo] are my food rules!), but the labels really stood out to me today so I took a bunch of photos with the thought that I could add them to my reference photo folder to draw at some point.
Well, some point came sooner than I thought, haha! I decided to play with the risograph brushes I have in procreate. I’ve done a few such drawings with them now and think I have a pretty good process.
First I sketch it out with a pencil. Then I make a layer for each colour and just block in solid shapes using a smooth, untextured brush, hiding each layer when done and just working from the original sketch. Then I select the colour layer, create a new layer and use a risograph brush to colour in the layer without lifting the pencil off the screen so you get the texture and everything in one single go. Oh, and set the layers to multiply. Doing it this way almost guarantees an “offset” look, where the layers overlap. If it’s too much in one area I will go back to the original shape layer and make adjustments, then redo the colour layer.
If none of this makes sense and you’d like a demo let me know! I’d be happy to make a little video (and just might anyway!)
TUESDAY FEBRUARY 27
I think it’s safe to say my hand is feeling better! Not fully, but much, much better.
I decided to draw a few more of the food packages I took photos of at the grocery store yesterday in my sketchbook. I used my Holbein watercolours, a black pencil and some Neocolor Is.
And then I had a play with some left-handed abstract something or others in my 5-year Hobonichi Techo that I spontaneously decided to turn into a sketchbook.
I’m so bad at writing it in daily. I go months without an entry, with the majority of the entries being “I should use this more” but then never do. So I’ve decided to move it from my desk where it taunts me to my pile of active sketchbooks.
I don’t know if it’s going to be all abstract. I don’t know if I’ll cover over what I’ve written. But I do know that I will use it more as a sketchbook than I have been as a journal!
I used a mix of acrylic paint and Neocolor I.
That was all after I logged off the computer but before I took Simon for his pre-dinner walk because it was pouring rain and I wanted to wait it out a bit.
After dinner I thought it would be fun to draw some more old family photos! I think I need to go visit my mom’s and dad’s and just take photos of all the photos so I can draw them all!
And finally, when TV got boring I pulled up an
replay of “punk and their cats” and did some quick drawings on my ipad. I just drew them as quick as I wanted and then fast-forwarded to the next. Fun stuff!WEDNESDAY FEBRUARY 28
Ray signed us up for another livestream on Twitch this morning so I spontaneously decided to start a new still life for the memories of grandma’s garden collection.
It’s funny, when I first took the photos for this still life setup I really didn’t like any of them. I think I felt they were missing flowers, but when I was looking for a reference to paint on stream this composition felt like it worked.
I wasn’t sure how it would go while I was also modding / chatting with the viewers of the livestream, but I think it actually helped because I had to keep looking away from the painting.
I primed the paper with the electric green again and then used neon pink to sketch everything out, then worked to block in the main colours.
Our stream was for 2 hours and I stopped painting around an hour and a half as I felt like it was a point where I needed to start concentrating on the details. But not a bad start for not thinking too much about it!
After dinner I had a play drawing some more photos in my sketchbook. These ones are a little more recent and I found them a little harder to draw. Like the pressure was higher for some reason? The previous ones were scans or photos of photos and these were digital photos, so maybe it’s something with the clarity? Who knows! Still fun though!
THURSDAY FEBRUARY 29
I had some free time this afternoon so I worked a little more on the still life. I think it’s just about done!
After I was done getting set up for ART HANG PARTY! I thought I’d have a go at a few more of Beth’s
game, where you combine animal heads on human bodies, but do the reverse! And then it was time for ART HANG PARTY! The theme was UNDERWATER SEASCAPES and I was pretty sure since the theme was set that I was going to use my Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints. The colours are a perfect match and I was looking forward to some loose flows abstracts.
But nope, last minute brain switch had me reaching for my cheepo set of Mont Martre oil pastels!
Since
set the theme and gathered references for this week (THANK YOU AGAIN!) I let her decide what we should set the timer at. I was thinking 3 minutes, and she agreed (though not sure everyone else did LOL)The oil pastels were really fun to smoosh around! I thought I would do one sheet of pastels then switch to watercolour for the next, but after doing one little reference with them it just wasn’t feeling right so I switched back to finish up.
FRIDAY MARCH 1
I had a lot of fun drawing along to the replay of
’s hug session after dinner tonight. I got out my big boi sketchbook, black pencil and a few Neocolor IIs.Beth set the timer at 5 minutes for the first few, then 10 for the rest, but I kind of ignored them all and just finished when I finished, sometimes fast forwarding to the next, but stopping if there was chatter to listen in :)
SATURDAY MARCH 2
We had our pop-up ART HANG PARTY! session this morning! The theme was picnics and we set the timer at 20 minutes for each reference.
Earlier in the week I had planned to use acrylic paint, knowing it would be a bit of a challenge. There was a second while I was getting everything set up that I questioned my decision and almost changed my mind, but no, I stuck with it and went with acrylics!
I’m really surprised at how much I was able to get done in just 20 minutes. I ended up using Neocolor Is for the last couple of minutes to add some finer details and bring it all together.
It was so nice to be able to hang out with our friends in other time zones again today and slow down a little. 🥰
SUNDAY MARCH 3
I’ve had this still life painting hanging up for a few days so I could look at it to see what needed finishing. I decided to tackle it this afternoon, and there really wasn’t a whole lot to do - just basically playing with the shadows a little, especially on the front corner of the notebook.
But now it’s done! Another piece for the memories of grandma’s garden collection!
It’s starting to feel like I’m getting there with the collection. Another canvas or two and I think I’m done! (Though I’ll probably never be down, you know?)
Sure you have already seen everything I show in this video but why not hear me blather on about it!
PS. I’m sooooo close to monetization on YouTube, so it would it really mean a lot if you could give it a watch (and subscribe over there if you’re not already!)
