Let’s Draw ANDY WARHOL Illustration Master Studies!
Plus a peek in my sketchbook & what I've been up to 👀
THURSDAY, JANUARY 16 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube
When I pulled “Andy Warhol Illustration Master Studies” out of the theme pot after drawing 100 horses on Thursday my first reaction was to put it back and pull another.
I’m so glad the chat was so excited about it though, because after pulling the references and actually looking at some of Andy’s pre-pop art illustration work I’m really excited to draw them!
All the illustrations we’ll be doing studies of are ones he made in the 1950s for advertising work, which I think is so cool (and more proof I know nothing about this man!) Perhaps I need to go read a book, or watch a documentary, or one of the many movies based on his life…
See you Thursday!
Also if I could ask a little favour, it would be really helpful if you click the thumbnail above and hit the “notify” button - it let’s YouTube know that people are excited about the upcoming livestream and they are more likely to share it to others.

Landscape Studies at Free Draw Friendzy!
✹ FRIDAY JANUARY 31, 5:00 pm et on zoom
Join me and
for a live drawing session! We'll chat and laugh and play with fast landscape composition studies, longer value studies, and then settle in for an even-longer time to capture a landscape however you see fit.MONDAY JANUARY 6
Today’s prompt for
people drawing month was the hardest yet! It was to draw people from a live cam, while they are moving.I won’t lie, I definitely cheated after struggling with the first few. Can you tell which they were? Then I decided to pause the video and zoom in and just draw people.
I will go back and try drawing people in motion. It feels wrong not to.
After that I joined
for her Sunset Self Portrait patreon zoom session.I love these sessions so much because it makes me slow down on my daily self portrait and put more effort into it.
It was also a coincidence that
posted about her self portraits over the years earlier in the day, which served as my inspiration. My plan was to do a full-body but as usual I cut my legs off. I don’t mind, I really like how this came out! Even my wonky shoulder, haha.

TUESDAY JANUARY 7
Oh look, more people! These were drawing with
and Mark Hoffmann on zoom.I was so surprised when Beth said we would just be drawing one reference. Unheard of at an
! But I knew I couldn’t spend a whole hour on just one image. I still took my time slowly working through four images, whereas usually I’d be rushing. T’was fun!Today’s self portrait
WEDNESDAY JANUARY 8
After reviewing all the art supplies I used last year I was reminded of the “drawing with watercolour” landscapes I was doing in my self-made sketchbook, and felt like playing in that style today.
It’s been a while. I felt very rusty! So after doing the first one on the left and not loving the outcome I decided to try it again on the right, zooming into the reference image (which I took on our morning walk of the frozen marina).
Wanna give it a try? Here’s the reference!

THURSDAY JANUARY 9
It was 100 HORSES in 100 MINUTES at ART HANG PARTY!
I have this big 4 or 5 foot long roll of Fabriano watercolour paper that I always forget about, but for this week I was inspired by Merrill to make a zine to hold all my horses (🤭). Merrill made a zine to hold her 100 cats, and it looked so cool!
By the time I cut and trimmed the paper I had two zines, which I filled front and back and still ran out of room despite me numbering each space so I finished up in my little Art Creations sketchbook.
I used my cheap paint sticks and Stabilo All pencil for the zines, then moved to a Faber Castell brush marker in the sketchbook.
I found the best way to capture everything was in a short little video, which you can see here:
FYI - we have collectively decided that next time we do one of these session we will cut the time and quantity in half, so 50 in 50, which will still be crazy but not quite the marathon.

FRIDAY JANUARY 10 - Ugh, I wrote up the recap of this whole day and it disappeared!
Long story short, the last art supplies I ordered before making my big “I’m not buying any more new art supplies” declaration arrived and I had so much fun swatching them out!
They are Shinhan PASS watercolour / gouache hybrid paints, and I got them in colours 870 Pink (thank you
for introducing this colour to me!), 816 Permanent Yellow, 841 Compose Blue, 849 Ultramarine Deep. Not to be overly dramatic or anything, but I think these are my new favourite paints.
Some quick colour charts - look at the greens the yellow and ultramarine make!
I recorded everything above (aside from the colour wheels) on video, if you’d like to have a watch!

SATURDAY JANUARY 11
I put Shinhan PASS paints to the test during a
drawing session this afternoon, where we drew black and white photo stills from the Netflix series Ripley. It was quite fun, and quite the challenge, to translate black and white photos into colour, like a reverse colour-study!
The paint was still wet on this spread so I got the little Art Creations sketchbook out and used the black, grey and pink Cretacolor Megacolor pencils to do the last two references. #comfortzone
I’ve been starting to think and plan for our coming trip to Japan at the end of February. The first time I went (this will be my third!) I didn’t sleep at all on the way there. That’s 14 hours of airtime, plus 3 hours at the airport before hand, plus 3 hours to wake up and get to the airport. I took a sleeping pill and melatonin and still didn’t sleep. It was rough to say the least!
That first night’s sleep was amazing though, I can tell you that much, and I was then solidly on Tokyo-time for the rest of the trip. The second time we flew I didn’t have any trouble sleeping on the plane.
In an effort to make sure this time I’m as comfy as possible I was looking for travel pillows, and then thought hey! I can sew now! I’ll make my own! Which is what I did this afternoon using my trusty flannel duvet cover and extra memory foam pillow filling. It’s a big log-shaped pillow that should allow me to snuggle up any which way I please.
Ray doesn’t think I’ll actually bring because it’s so big, but I think I just need to make a pouch to cram it into and throw into my backpack.

SUNDAY JANUARY 12
has an early session this morning which I was thankful to be awake for! It was drawing yearbook photos from the ‘90s - so much fun!I used a Blackwing matte pencil and the pink and compose blue Shinhan PASS (I need a nickname or short form for this name because I’m going to be using it a lot).
The paints were dried in a watercolour pan, and I’m happy to say they are just as vibrant as straight from the tube! They re-wet super easy too.
The teachers:
It’s not even noon yet today, but I’m going to send this off now. I will share whatever else I get up today with you next week!
Today’s self portrait
I’m sure most of you have already seen this but if not, here’s a deep-dive into everything I used last year, what I made with them, and how many times I used them.
Shoutout to me taking a photo of everything I make and saving it to my google photos, allowing me to go back and tally everything up!
If you have any questions about anything please let me know. And let me know what your most used art supply is, and what your fav is, if they’re different!
For comparison, check out last year's list here (this one is only 3 minutes long, not an hour, LOL):
And of course here is the swatching of my new fav paints:
