BUG WEEK!
+ changing up my newsletter schedule
It just occrued to me that perhaps the timing of my newsletter is a little off… I usually put them out Friday evening, sometimes Saturday, but really shouldn’t I be putting them out on before ART HANG PARTY!? Either maybe Tuesday or Wednesday, so that you have details for the upcoming livestream? DUH! Since this literally just occurred to me, you’re getting this on Thursday, but next week will be earlier!
So here we go!
It’s BUG WEEK at ART HANG PARTY!
THURSDAY JULY 27 AT 7PM ET!
Live streaming on YouTube & Twitch:
🔗 youtube.com/@melissamartinart/streams
Over on the ART HANG PARTY! discord there was some talk that a recommended colour palette would be helpful to eliminate “analysis paralysis” when *all the colours* are in front of you and the timer is ticking, so here we are!
The first slide is a limited 9 colour palette that is a distillation of all the colours from the second slide, which represents 4 colours from each reference photo, grouped into similar colour ranges.

I hope this is helpful!
Since this week hasn’t happened yet, I’ll show you my drawings next week :)
Next ART HANG PARTY! will be Thursday, August 3 at 7pm et on YouTube & Twitch
Theme: TBD!

THIS WEEK IN MY SKETCHBOOK
Saturday July 22
We had a big family bbq at my aunt and uncle’s farm. I think there were about 35 of us! It was a lovely time catching up with everyone, lots of food, hugs, chats, and painting! It was fun to sit with some of my cousins and draw and paint with them.
This was my first one, which I did with watercolour, but I wasn’t entirely happy with it so I added coloured pencils and wax pastels, like I do, and really like how it came out!
And then I had a scribble with coloured pencils in my sketchbook.
And then as I was sitting chatting and munching on cherries I did this loose pen and watercolour sketch. Two more of my cousins were also painting beside me - so cool!
Sunday July 23
I stayed over at my sister’s and took the bus home early on Sunday. It was long 2.5 hour ride, and while I wasn’t really doing anything but dozing and listening to an audiobook, it’s always very tiring. So I really wasn’t in the mood for art-making, and spent most of the day snuggling Simon on the couch. But after dinner I felt I should do something, so I got out my new markers and my wax pastels and scribbled something that resembles my aunt’s vegetable garden.
Monday July 24
It has been hot and steamy with sudden thunderstorms in Toronto this week so when we head outside to sit we’re sticking pretty close to home. This spot in the park across the street is becoming our go to.
I wanted to play with the lose pen and watercolour style of this brick wall garden area, but I think I totally overworked. Less is definitely more in this style.
Tuesday July 25
Art Disco day! Ray played for a wopping 3 and half hours, after almost not playing at all, LOL. You can watch the replay here!
I decided to paint from a photo of me and my cousin painting in the field during our family bbq. I used acrylic ink as my base, and then coloured pencils and wax pastels.
I had to stop around the 3 hour mark on this or else I was going to start to ruin it, LOL
Wednesday July 26
Back outside to our favourite spot again! Pretty soon I’m going to have a 360° view of this little area. For this I used gouache as my base, and then pencils and pastels.
While we were sitting here there was a cricket game happening in the ball diamond to our right, which was pretty fun to watch. And it’s a good thing we packed up when we did because almost as soon as we got inside it started pouring rain!
Thursday July 27
ART HANG PARTY! day!
