Today was Build-A Ballroom at ART HANG PARTY! And as with all our build-a-scene sessions this one was a lot of fun!

We had 4 minutes for each reference, and the challenge was to collage them all together on one page into a big giant ballroom scene. Which turned out be more of a big giant party if you ask me!

FRIDAY JULY 24

I made myself a new little watercolour palette with mostly my OG Holbein colours (Gamboge Nova, Quin Magenta, Turquoise Blue, Sap Green, Ultramarien Deep, Lavender, Shell Pink), and a few new favourites added in (Lemon Yellow Deep, Buff Titanium, Quin Opera, Indigo, Vandyke Brown).

I’ll take this for a spin tomorrow when I’m out night kayaking in Stratford, ON!

SATURDAY JULY 25

I’m in Stratford! I was able to do this quick painting while others were adding lights and decorations to our kayaks and paddle boards.

Then we had a great time kayaking the Avon River as the sun set!

SUNDAY JULY 26

I did a quick little painting of my niece’s cat Mika before we headed off for a big family bbq.

Let’s make our own sketchbooks! I’m sharing two methods for making sketchbooks that both lay flat. One uses tape, and the other uses glue / Modpodge.

This week we are doing another build-a-scene, ballroom style!

If you’ve never done one of our build-a-scene sessions you’re in for a treat!

We start with one reference and add it the main element to our page. Then the next reference’s main element added to that, and so on as we sort of build up the scene, collaging or piecing all the elements together in a way that makes sense. Everyone’s compositions are different, but they all end up looking like the scene we’re building.

It’s so fun!

MONDAY JULY 13

When I heard about the passing of David Hockey a few weeks ago I felt it was time to finally order his A Yorkshire Sketchbook, a book that I had been wanted to get for a while now.

It arrived today and I had a quick flip through before we headed out to sit in the park after dinner.

Inspired, I filled 3 water brushes with varying amounts of water and ink. This is my paltry attempt at a value study. It was so humid outside the ink wouldn’t try and I was far too impatient so it turned into a bit of mess. But, I have the brushes now and will keep at it.

I also had a dual tipped blue and red pencil with me so I did turned my attention to the rose bush, which is looking far less pink compared to last week.

Today was Emotions of the World Cup day at ART HANG PARTY!

When I was gather references for this session I found so many good photos that it was hard to be as selective as I usually am, and ended up with 35 images. Great if we wanted to go faster, not so great if we didn’t.

Before we got started I asked the group what they felt like. Be super-speedy and do all 35 at 1.5 to 2 minutes each, or have a little more time, 3 minutes, and only do 20. (LOL only 20). We ended up with a bit of compromise, starting with 4 warmups at 1 minute, and then settling in to 3 minutes.

Before we started I had a look through my fountain pen collection to see which I wanted to use today. I kinda wanted to use my Kakimori dip pen but needed something that would dry quicker, so I settled on the Pilot Parallel Pen.

Then I switched to a rainbow pencil and had a lot more fun drawing! (Jennifer mentioned it and I couldn’t get it out of my head)

I am hoping the soccer police don’t come after me for this session, but this week we are drawing the emotions of the World Cup!

Having watched a fair few games over the last couple of weeks I couldn’t help but notice all of the great expressions on the players faces, whether in victory after a goal, in sorrow after a goal, or in agony after the slightest of grazes from an opposing player.

Whatever the mood, there are so many good faces for us to try to capture!

MONDAY JULY 6

I took my new little (semi) dried Rosa Studio gouache palette (it’s been a week and it still hasn’t fully dried yet) to the park. We settled near the beautiful pink bush (no idea what it’s called thought it might just be a rose bush) so I tried to capture it again.

I started with a base layer of gouache, then added on colour pencils and Neocolor II. I think this is starting to get back to where my plein air landscapes used to be. Though, looking at it now I think I could have added even more contrast. Always more contrast!

It was WATER WEEK at ART HANG PARTY!

One of the things I love most about drawing / painting / creating with other people, whether at AHP or in other sessions, is that hard things become less so1. Suddenly something you’ve been daunted by, like the texture of water, becomes doable. The timer starts and you have no choice but to put paint to paper, knowing that you aren’t alone. It’s like magic!

We had 15 minutes for each reference, with a bonus 5 minute one at the end (the pink floaty flamingo), and the last 15-minutes we did upside-down (the choppy water with trees, bottom left), which was fun!

I wanted to use my new Rosa gouache, but wet this time. I felt like I kept watering it down, so I had to keep reminding myself that it’s ok to use more paint on my brush, but it was nice to build up the layers.

FRIDAY JULY 10

I haven’t told you about my new toy camera yet, have I? Well, I suppose in the context of this newsletter it just arrived yesterday, right before AHP, but in context of composing this newsletter I have already had one full day with it!

It is the Kodak Charmera (like a camera, but charming). It is very tiny. It comes in a blind box so you don’t really know what design you will get. And honestly, this one would have been last on my list but it’s the one I got so I’ve convinced myself that I don’t mind.

But it’s cute! And it’s fun! And I’m going to carry it with me all the time to capture random scenes and interesting things that catch my eye.

And these are some from our after-dinner walk, featuring Emmy, the most chill golden doodle who offered a handshake and smile in exchange for having her photo taken 🥹

Back when Ray and I first started hanging out (before we started dating) we used to go on photo walks all over the city. Photography was my main creative hobby, alongside knitting, for years. Then, once Simon came along it became harder to take photos while walking him and we started to leave the cameras at home.

We still have quite the camera collection, Ray with his DSLR and mirrorless and me with toy film cameras, but this little Kodak Charmera is making me feel excited to get back to doing photo walks!

SATURDAY JULY 11

I joined for a zoom session this afternoon. She shared photos of some fun statues from her visit to the Royal Botanical Gardens.

I started out with watercolour. We had 8 minutes per photo and I ended up spending double the time on the page on the left.

Then I grabbed a smaller sketchbook and my Neocolors and leaned into the scribbles.

After dinner I took myself on a walk over to Coronation Park. I brought along a sketchbook thinking I would settle in for a good sit and draw time, but only did this quickie before continuing on to Trillium Park.

Of course I brought my new little camera!

I will try to be more brutal editing down the photos that I share here, but for now it’s just too fun and I want to share the ones that turned out half-decent.

My favourite of today is the couple on the bench.

This week we are slowing down in order to tackle a universally challenging subject: water!

We will only have 4 reference photos that we will study for 15 minutes each (I originally said 20 minutes but I’ve been feeling like 60 minutes is my max lately).

I tried to find photos from my camera roll where the water was the focus and with different textures to it. I think I’m planning to use some new gouache I got this week, but also pastels are calling my name, so time will tell!

I realize looking at this now that because I was using gouache I could have corrected that beefy flag pole. Ah well, still lovely to sit outside in the evening feeling the wind off the lake. Not so lovely: the giant ants that were crawling all over us!

WEDNESDAY JULY 1 🇨🇦

Happy Canada Day! What a treat to have a holiday fall in the middle of the week!

Today felt like we were on vacation in Jamaica. You know that feeling of walking out of your resort hotel room and into a wall of hot air? That’s what it was like as soon as we stepped outside. Even though it was 35°C 45°C with humidity, Ray and I decided to brave it and go to Kensington Market for lunch.

We watched the England v Congo DR game with sweat running down our back, enjoying a cold bevvie and the best grilled cheese of my life. We were inside but the windows were open so we might as well have been on the patio, which still contributed to vacation vibes.

THURSDAY JULY 2

Today we travelled to Somerset with Mark Vasey at ART HANG PARTY!

I say it every time, but I really love when we get to travel somewhere with an AHP friend, and Mark did not disappoint with his photo selections!

As we do with our travel sessions, we started fast with some 2-minute warm ups, then moved to 5 minutes, then 7 minutes, 10 minutes, and back to 7 for the last one.

I used my teal Uglybook and a black Faber-Castel double-ended marker. I really do enjoy just focusing on lines and shapes and value with these sessions.

Today’s self portrait

FRIDAY JULY 3

A few days ago I got a set of 9 little tubs of Rosa Gallery’s Studio gouache. (You can see it swatched out on Tuesday’s self portrait above). It was a total spontaneous purchase when I saw it for $14 plus $14 shipping. $30 for 9 x 20ml tubs of gouache? Ok!

I’ve been wanting to play with gouache again, and I really liked the classic colours of this set. It means I need to colour mix and not just rely on the beautiful colours that came in the Spring set of Holbein tubes I have.

I also made a little travel palette where I’m letting the paint dry, so I can use when I’m out and about. It’s been a few days since it’s been drying, and the paint is still a bit sticky, so I’m not sure if it’ll ever fully dry, but I think it’s good enough to close up and put in a bag.

Long story short, here’s a flower I painted with it:

Another spontaneous thing that happened was being given the afternoon off work!

Ray and I trudged through the heat to find a nice shady spot along the water to hang out. There was a nice breeze and lots of people to watch.

I hadn’t unpacked my travel kit from Wednesday yet so I grabbed that before we left.

I realized I only had one spread left in this sketchbook so I treated myself to another:

I took myself to the mall because I was in desperate need for some summer tops. When I got home I recorded and started editing my June Art Chat. No art was made.

Playing with the new Rosa gouache and a photo I snapped at the Music Garden the other day. I’m calling this base-layer one, and plan to come back to it to work on more, with more gouache and probably colour pencils and Neocolor IIs. I’m trying to remember that it’s ok if I don’t finish something in one go!

A note from Mark:

Somerset is a county in the South West of England. In these photos I’ve taken, we will see a few snaps of my hometown of Clevedon, as well as Glastonbury Tor, Portishead Point Lighthouse, a seagull sitting on Watchet Harbour, some young cows at a prehistoric stone circle at Stanton Drew, and some cygnets in the little city of Wells. There’s a picture of my brother stomping about on muddy sand dunes with a historic tidal harbour behind him and a photo of myself being swept off a pier! Hopefully, there’s something for everyone to have some fun sketching.

MONDAY JUNE 22

I don’t know if it’s come across here much, but I have been feeling less than inspired to play in my sketchbook lately. When that happens I think it makes sense to go back to something comfortable, and for me, there is nothing more comfortable than an old faded photo scan of my grandma’s garden.

I used a set of Sennelier oil pastels that have very classic colours. I think part of the reason I haven’t reached for them more is because the greens are not my kind of greens. You can see them poking through on the little hill, but it meant I needed to use the pastels more like paint, and layer and mix and play more than if I had used my big set of 100 colours. And I think this turned out much more interesting because of it.

All in all a fun time!

TUESDAY JUNE 23

I had to take my bike to the shop to fix a flat tire, which was going to take about 30 minutes for them to do, so I waited across the street the Music Garden and painted my second-favourite willow tree.

My plan was to go for a long bike ride once it was fixed, but then I thought about the little sewing project I started on the weekend and wanted to work on it instead.

It’s almost done! I just need to stuff the arms and legs and then figure out how I’m going to attach everything!

We went to a Blue Jays game today, and had quite the celebrity sighting in our section!

Today was Animal Palettes at ART HANG PARTY!

We revisited our animal friends from this session and had a different 4-colour colour palette for each.

FRIDAY JUNE 26

I finished the train stuffy! It’s so incredibly silly I can’t wait to give it to my coworker next week!

After dinner, even though it felt more like a late fall day than early summer, we walked over to Coronation Park and sat by the lake. I really wanted to paint trees and I’m thankful Ray was up for a bit of a chilly time.

I sketched the tip of Trillium Park using a fluorescent pink pencil, then slowly layered watercolour until I decided it needed some Neopastels on top, which I’m very happy I did.

And then I had a quick play with the Neopastels before decided it was too cold and we went home and watched some soccer.

SATURDAY JUNE 27

We had a little time to sit in the park before Ray had to head off for his gig. I wasn’t going to take a sketchbook with me but grabbed one at the last minute.

Some of you may remember that we were supposed to draw Clifton Hill, Niagara Falls this week, but as I was reviewing my reference photos I was not feeling inspired at all. I kept thinking about Jennifer’s bears from last week (trust me and watch this part of the replay!) and how much fun they were, and decided that we should do that!

I found my collection of references from our “negative space animals” session (a fav!) and we’ll use the fun new random colour palette generator from last week and just have a good time drawing animals with limited colours.

MONDAY JUNE 15

Today felt more like early fall than late spring. We went out for a walk and had a very short sit in the park where I drew this very rough scene from across the lake.

TUESDAY JUNE 16

Another cooler day but we decided to brave it. These Canadian geese were straight up chillin’ on this pad and I thought they would be fun have a seat and draw them.

When a dad with his toddler walked up and started coaxing one toward them and the mother decided to feed them part of her egg salad sandwich we decided to bolt.

We sat back in the same Muskoka chairs as yesterday for a bit before continuing on a walk along the water.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 17

What did I do today? I have no… OH! I went out a bar to watch soccer with Ray while he and his friends played music. It was fun!

THURSDAY JUNE 18

Today we played with colour at ART HANG PARTY!

For the first time in AHP history (maybe, as far as I can recall) I didn’t have to gather references for us to draw. I did, however, find a great colour palette generator to help guide us in our colour play.

I had no idea how it was going to go, but it was a lot of fun! We saw four colours at a time. We started with 5 minutes and then settled into 7 minutes on the timer, changing colour palettes to keep the play going.

I, as you can see, layered all the colours, making marks and seeing how this colour interacted with that colour. I got received some good ideas from the chat when I felt stuck and like I was just doing the same thing over and over again (special mentions to who suggested I close my eyes and scribble, and Mark for suggesting I take a colour for a walk around the paper!)

Others, wow! Others were so creative! There were bears drawn using the little colour palettes, there were landscapes and flowers and birds, there were full pages of overlapping patterns, flower swatches, geometric swatches, abstracts, portraits, street scenes, skeletons! Not to pick favourites, but even made mini collages!

This is from the “Bad on Purpose” replay, where the brief was to blindfold yourself and draw to verbal clues while drawing as bad as possible. Mission accomplished!

❗️ HOMEWORK: Gather all your art supplies in all the colours, along with some paper or sketchbooks.

A few weeks ago I watched a YouTube video by Lynsay Green about how she explores colour in her colour play sketchbook and it made me really want to get out my sketchbook and just play with colour!

That’s exactly what we’re going to do this week. Get out all our art supplies in all the colours and see how they work together, or not.

I’m thinking I’ll show some colours on the screen for inspiration, either individually or maybe little palettes, and then we can use the timer to keep us moving and get too stuck.

It’ll be very different from our usual sessions, and I’m really looking forward to it!

MONDAY JUNE 8

I’m continuing on with the lovely Trees in June theme that and her are doing this month. Every day a different member has shared photos from their camera roll.

Today was See’s day, with these lovely birch trees, and I used Holbein granulating watercolours.

TUESDAY JUNE 9

Today’s tree is an olive tree from Silke, and I used this teeny tiny Holbein palette.

After that I pulled up a replay of ’s France drawing session. I did not follow the rules at all, or finish the session, or add enough contrast in the chateau, but it was fun so it’s all good.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 10

Today after work I hopped on a bike1 to meet up with Steph for a little art date by the water!

I was recently sent a set of 72 colour pencils from Woomer. The only requirement from them was to use them and share my thoughts in a video on YouTube, so I brought them along to have a little play with.

I swatched them all out as we sat and chatted and watched seagulls and dogs on the beach.

My initial first impression of these pencils can be summed up with one emoji: 🧈

They are so soft and creamy, and it is very easy to get the full colour payoff from them! You would think after swatching 72 saturated squares of colour my hand would have been ready to fall off, but even as I’m writing this the next morning, my hand feels completely normal.

Then I had a little play on a postcard. The paper is cold pressed, so pretty textured which doesn’t normally bode well for pencils, but I found these just sort of melted onto the paper!

Before we packed up I did a quick drawing of the people sitting in front of us watching their kid play in the water. I used my new Kaweco Sport pencil and a few Pentel brush pen markers.

I love art date days! Here is to more of them much more often!

THURSDAY JUNE 11

It was so much fun drawing OUR FIRST CRUSHES at ART HANG PARTY! today!

We swooned over all the pretty faces and flowy hair as we reminisced and giggled our way through drawing 22 celebs at 3 minutes each.

I thought it would be cute to make a little set of trading cards! Before the session I cut up some sheets of Canson XL watercolour paper and then taped off areas to add their names (which I added after the session). I used my new Kaweco Sport 3.2mm pencil (LOVING IT btw) and pink and compose blue ShinHan Pass paint.

I think these are so fun! I’m not sure I caught every likeness perfectly but with a little imagination we can pretend.

We headed to a friend’s house for dinner directly after work so no art today.

I took myself on a rambling walk before dinner and found myself inside a bookstore. They had this “notebook” that looked and felt a lot like what I imagine the Khadi Fat watercolour sketchbooks to feel like so I had to pick it up. It doesn’t say what the paper is, but it’s going to be lovely for watercolour.

SUNDAY MAY 31

One of the surprise benefits of switching to the Hobonichi Techo original for my daily self portraits are the monthly spreads at the beginning of the book. My 5-Year techo didn’t have that!

I’ve decided to use it as little abstract swatches for each day, using the same supplies I use for my self portraits.

MONDAY JUNE 1

This month I am going to follow along with and paint trees!

The members have all shared beautiful photos of trees for everyone’s to use as reference. I’ve decided I’m going to use a little sketchbook I made a while go from the last bit of my big Fabriano watercolour paper, it’s about 3-inches square.

I’ve also decided to use a different watercolour palette each day, because I have so many of them and I never use them!

This one is a tree in Lübeck from Heike and uses the Viviva spring palette.

TUESDAY JUNE 2

I received a little order from Jacksons today, which I swatched out on the left page above. I’ll try to remember to take a photo of the actual supplies too, because they are very pretty! Especially the little Kaweco Sport pencil that has a 3.2 mm lead.

For the Neopastels, only the larger swatches are new but I wanted to see what my full collection looks like. I think I’m pretty set now! Same with the Faber-Castell brush markers. No need for more…

So far so good with the intention to paint trees! This one is from Laura of Florida palm trees. I think the fronds kind of got away from me, but I really like the trunks.

I used my small Roman Szmal tin filled with pieces of Daniel Smith watercolour sticks on the left/bottom, and Holbein watercolours on the right/top.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 3

Today was a work from home day so I used the time I would normally take walking to the office this morning to have a little play in my flowers-from-life sketchbook with Neopastels. (Does a Lego flower count as from life?)

Today’s trees were shared by Scot, from the San Antonio River in Brackenridge Park. I used one of my favourite random palettes filled with granulating Gansai Tambi, granulating Super Vision watercolours, and some of my tried and tested Holbein watercolours that live inside a Neocolor I tin :)

THURSDAY JUNE 4

Today was ART HANG PARTY! and we travelled to Iceland with Meli from !

Not only did we get to draw from Meli’s photos but we got to hear all her stories because she was here with me live and in person! It is always such a treat when a guest is able to come over.

I’ve been using an Uglybook for our travel sessions, and today I decided to use my Pentel Pocket Brush Pen with it instead of a black acrylic brush marker. They are very similar in effect but I think it changes the way I draw a little. These are definitely less graphic and flat in style, and a lot more smudgy. I’m not sure one is better than the other, but just something I noticed.

Today’s tree is a Bonnie Doon scar tree from Nic in Australia. I used another little custom palette in a Muji travel container. The paints are sitting in empty gum packaging!

FRIDAY JUNE 5

Today was the first day since Simon that I would be coming home from work to an empty house, and I’m not going to lie, I was feeling really weird about it.

To help ease feeling so alone (Purly was home but she was happy napping) I picked up my camera, had a nice little chat and then went on a little park date.

It ended up being fine coming home, just one of those firsts that needed to happen.

SATURDAY JUNE 6

Today’s self portrait was my main art for the day (I forgot about trees, and it was my day for sharing references!).

I actually recorded the process of painting this to test out using a better camera for my overhead shots instead of my phone and not having my webcam freeze (if you’ve been to AHP in the last few weeks you’ll know I’ve having issues).

I’m happy to report that it worked!

Instead of getting another sketchbook out I decided to pull every.single.thing out of my closet and do a massive declutter. 🫣 Only things I actually wear, with the exception of one top and one jumpsuit that I can’t seem to get rid of, made the cut.

My dresser drawers were over-filled and I had two suitcases stuffed with clothes to use for fabric to upcycle into other things that I wasn’t doing, plus other things that I thought my nieces might like.

In the end I had 3 bags to be donated and 2 that were not fit to wear anymore.

Is there a better feeling than a successful declutter??

SUNDAY JUNE

I played catch-up on the trees today. The left side trees are from Esther of a little stream in Wissant, France. I used my fav Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints that fit perfectly in Faber-Castell pencil tins.

The right side is one of my references, from Hanlans Beach at Toronto Island. I used the little contact lens palette which has ShinHan Pass Pink and Compose Blue.

Today’s trees are from Susan, and I used these very muted Japanesque watercolours.

I will admit that my trees are turning a bit more abstract than I would have thought, but I’m having fun digging out all my rarely-used palettes, so it’s all good!

We spontaneously went to a Blue Jays game today. They lost, but the roof was open for the first time :)

Today was Landscape day at ART HANG PARTY!

This felt like an extreme comfort-zone session for me, going back to my lovely Roman Szmal landscape watercolour palette, being loose and somewhat abstract with everything.

We started with one minute on the timer, and then added a minute to each new reference, ending with ten minutes for the last. The timing felt nice and gentle to me.

Also I didn’t have any tech hiccups tonight, thankfully!

I’m going to a friend’s house tomorrow for dinner before we head out to a party. It’s also his birthday (well, was recently his birthday) so I thought I’d take him fixings for my favourite cocktail: the Dark ‘n Stormy.

SUNDAY MAY 17

Sunday was a hard day. We had to say goodbye to Simon. I know I mentioned it last week, but it is such a devastating loss to not have him constantly with us, a void in my / our entire way of being that to not mention it again wouldn’t feel right. It doesn’t feel right that he’s not here.

It all happened early in the morning, and when we got home it was like, what do we do now?

Thankfully ’s weekly livestream was coming up so I grabbed my rainbow pencil and enjoyed drawing The Netherlands with her.

MONDAY MAY 18

We had had a couple days of camping planned. We debated cancelling but decided to go.

We normally book a little cabin at the KOA campground in Owen Sound, which is right on the bottom of Georgian Bay, one of the most beautiful bodies of water you’ll ever see. This time we decided to book at the Niagara Falls location as it’s less of a drive, and Simon wouldn’t have been up for any hikes anyway (I mean, he would have been, but his arthritis wouldn’t).

It’s really nice at this one. It’s a lot bigger and seems well cared for. We’ll definitively come back again.

TUESDAY MAY 19

Today we drove the long 10 minute drive from the campground to the falls. Our original plan was to sit in the beautiful park across the street and enjoy the view under some shade, but since Simon wasn’t with us we were able to explore a little more.

We walked down Clifton Hill, which is full of endless temptation for children (I remember being in awe as a kid when we would go).

Then we walked along the falls for a bit. We didn’t walk the way to the Horseshoe Falls, because it all kind of looks the same after a while. I mean, it is a natural wonder, but one we’ve been visiting since we were young so it kind of looses it’s majestic-ness…

I did manage to get a drawing in. Drawing waterfalls are hard! I think we need an AHP session…

After this we headed back to the cabin and just chilled. Had a fire. Enjoyed a good storm.

Today was Miniature Figures with at ART HANG PARTY!

Nell shared six really fun photos of teeny tiny figures in very cleverly staged settings. Things like people floating on Fruit Loops in a lake made of bubble-wrap, taking the measuring tape escalator, or snowboarding on ice cubes. Creativity at its most whimsical!

FRIDAY MAY 22

If there is one thing I have learned over the last 6 months, first after losing Knit and now Simon, it’s that grief hits me really hard between 3:17 and 4:27 in the morning. I wake up and then can’t get back to sleep, no matter how many times I count my breaths from 1 to 9. What do you find to work best when you can’t sleep?

Anyway, I drew the horseshoe falls with Neocolor II in my almost-finished Pith sketchbook. And then I ordered a new one, along with some other goodies from Jacksons website.

I spent a lovely afternoon with and the drawing Laura’s photos from Pennsylvania. I’m on a mission to get more comfortable and be more loose using markers, so that’s what I decided to use today.

I joined another zoom session with this morning. This time Scot was sharing information about different herbs and their medicinal qualities. It was great, and now I feel like I need to start a little herb garden.

So I bought a new laptop. There was a little hope they could fix mine, but in the end it would have needed a whole new logic board (the complete insides replaced), and it didn’t make sense to invest that amount of money in an already 4-year old computer.

I spent the evening starting to set it up and then dove right in to decorating it with stickers from , , , , Sie-ce, Leigh Ellexon, Kristy Rice :)

I went to another Blue Jays game today! Ray got us tickets for my birthday but the dog sitter wasn’t available so he suggested I invite my sister to go with me. It was so fun to hang out, catch up, and cheer together!

THURSDAY MAY 14

It was Lord of the Rings day at ART HANG PARTY! and it was really rather enjoyable!

I was trying to think about what materials I wanted to use all week. We had 5 minutes per reference, and a lot of them were pretty involved so I knew I should keep it simple. I was going to go with a fountain pen and watercolour, or a rainbow pencil, or even just a pencil or two. And then I thought about a water soluble pencil, but I only have chunky ones.

That all lead me to the ArtGraf pot, which I thought would be fun to mix with a little palette of ShinHan Pass pink and compose blue that I have. I used a General Pencil Co 9B graphite pencil for the line work.

It was a really fun combo to use and I love how these turned out! I mean, Frodo has no business being that handsome, does it?

FRIDAY MAY 15

Today was so fun! We had an IRL art meet up with , , and Ann Tiniacoudis in Kensington Market!

I’m so thankful the nice spring weather finally decided to show up! We found a nice big table on a sunny patio, which we immediately covered with all our art supplies.

It was great fun chatting and drawing each other and patio neighbours.

Start popping the popcorn because we’re going to the movies!

This week we’ll be revisiting the classic Lord of the Rings trilogy, drawing our way from Bilbo’s house in the Shire all the way to Mount Doom in Mordor.

Don’t worry, you don’t need to have seen the movies to enjoy drawing from them—Lotr is some of the most celebrated cinematic movies of our time!

I have selected 4 scenes from each movie, 12 in total, that not only capture the basic storyline but will be fun to draw. We will have 5 minutes for each, and they will be widescreen movie stills, so plan accordingly.

I’m thinking I might try making a zine or little landscape accordion sketchbook so I have a comic book of sorts when we’re done.

This is going to be fun!

MONDAY MAY 4

I took myself out for a tattoo date today! One day a vision of a clover appeared on my right hand, as a little companion to the strawberry on my left hand.

If you have tattoos, does that ever happen to you?

The strawberry is a doodle from Sophie McPike’s sketchbook, one of my favourite artists and art friend, so I thought it would be cute to ask if she had a clover I could use to match. She said yes(!) and invited me to have a look through her past sketchbooks (via sketchbook tour videos and patreon posts). There were so many good ones, but when I eventually saw this cute little loopy one I knew it was the winner!

I also knew it would only take a couple minutes for the tattoo artist (Heewon) to do (it took 18 minutes from start to finish, including touching up my strawberry tattoo!) so I had a look through her available flash tattoos and loved this little swallow, which felt like he belonged on my arm.

Pretty sure is this only the beginning of filling up my left arm now!

TUESDAY MAY 5

On Sunday we had a little birthday celebration for me and my friend Annie, whose birthday was on the 1st, at Ray’s weekly gig. It was a lot of fun!

This is a cute little selection of some goodies people were generous enough to gift me, including the cutest little jar of “hundreds and thousands” to make “fairy bread”1 for my breakfast on my birthday from , macarons and a tiny little bottle of bubbles!

I used watercolour to paint this, and now I’m thinking that we need to do a “reflections” session at AHP. Thoughts?

WEDNESDAY MAY 6

Can you believe I have completed 2 full years of daily self portraits? That’s 730 days of intentionally sitting down to spend a little time with myself. Sometimes for 30 seconds, sometimes for a lot longer. Sometimes I will forget and have to catch up the next day.

I’m going to continue on tomorrow, but I’m pretty impressed that I have made it this far.

THURSDAY MAY 7

Today was ART HANG PARTY! and my birthday! What a treat!

As it is the first Thursday of the month we continued with our travel session tradition. This time travelled (in our sketchbooks) to NEW YORK with AHP friend Tyler Alexy! She was there a couple of month ago and shared some of her vacation photos with us.

Just before the session as I was starting to set up, I was doing my customary restart of my laptop and it decided it had had enough. It would not turn back on. It was dead. Died. No matter how hard or long I pressed the power button, nothing happened. How’s that for a happy birthday!😩

Thankfully Ray was home and I quickly set up on his laptop as best as I could. It was not perfect, but it was good enough. (I have an appointment at the Apple Store on Sunday to see if there’s anything they can do, but it’s not looking good… )

My birthday started with Fairy Bread!

On the first Thursday of every month we travel somewhere in the world with an AHP friend, and this month we are going to New York with Tyler Alexy!

These sessions are a great time to practice urban sketching styles, simplifying complex scenes, and get ready to take your sketchbooks outside as the warmer weather starts to settle in (at least here in the Northern hemisphere). I myself like to use a black paint marker and focus on lines and shapes.

I always look forward to the beginning of the month!

SUNDAY APRIL 26

I had a sudden urge to knit something this evening. I have a pair of mittens on the go, but I have to constantly look at the pattern for those, and I was also watching the Celtics beat the shorts of the 76ers, so I needed something easier that I could just work away at without thinking.

Back when I was knitting regularly I used to knit little coffee sleeves all the time. I would draft my own silly decorative patterns, which were really fun to do (if you scroll back far enough on my IG you’ll see a bunch!), but this one I used some beautiful yarn that a coworker passed along to me. As soon as I saw the yarn it reminded me of a strawberry, so that’s what I made!

I’m going to gift this to my coworker as a thank-you, but I might need to make another for myself!

MONDAY APRIL 27

Breaking News! We had a Spring sighting today! While it was still probably a bit too cold for an enjoyable time, I decided to take my lunch outside and sit by the lake. I won’t lie, I was cold, but the sun and the birds and squirrels made it worth it.

After dinner I started my art time with my self portrait. I asked Ray to pick a colour palette from my little colour palette book. Then I asked him to pick a prompt from my AHP art prompt card (comes with every washi tape and sticker order, btw ;). He chose “blind contour”.

I pulled out my colour pencils because I thought I could get the best match, and then I did 4 blind contours on top of each other, trying to be strategic about how and where the colours would overlap.

I think I did ok!

And then because I had my colour pencils out and I was in a spring-y mood, I decided to pull up the Claude Monet’s garden website (did you know you can take a virtual 360° tour of his house and garden? It’s a feast for your eyes!).

My plan was to do 4 vignettes, but my creative intention was bigger than my creative stamina (not to mention the power-knitting I did on the coffee sleeve yesterday and the hand-fatigue that caused), and I ended up with this:

My goodness ART HANG PARTY! was fun tonight! We did build-a Birthday Party!

I’m not sure it’s a very well kept secret, especially if you’ve been to AHP in the last few weeks, that my birthday falls on a Thursday. Next Thursday to be exact. As we were talking about it a few people mentioned they also had birthdays soon, and so the idea for a birthday party started to form! But also the first Thursday of every month is when we travel somewhere around the world with an AHP friend, and I had Tyler all scheduled with New York. Plus I was also toying with idea of taking the week off, but then decided against it because it really is a treat to draw with you every week and why deny myself that on my birthday?

Anywayyyyy, we build a pretty epic birthday party tonight!

We had 20 references and 3 minutes on the timer for each. It was a lot of elements to piece and fit together, which just made for a more fun scene!

We are going to build the most epic birthday party scene, and it’s going to be so much fun!

We start with one reference and add the main element from it to our page (think birthday cake on a table). Then the next reference’s main element added to that (think someone blowing out candles), and so on as we sort of build up the scene, collaging or piecing all the elements together in a way that makes sense. Everyone’s compositions are different, but they will all end up looking like a great big birthday party!

I love our build-a-scenes so much, and I think this one is going to be a lot of fun!

MONDAY APRIL 20

I remember a while ago Sandi Hester showed a technique of drawing flowers, where she held one in her hand and drew it from multiple positions. I’m sure she wasn’t the first person to do this, but she was the first person I saw do it. I remember feeling compelled to try it right away and loved the experience. I did it a few times, and then not again until today. Why? It’s such a nice time! I should do it with more things.

Did you know that you can make custom Nike shoes? It’s pretty cool! My favourite recent pair of Huarache’s had to finally be retired after our Tokyo trip. I wore them straight for two solid years and it was time.

I loved them so much that I was on the hunt for another pair, but Nike doesn’t have any out right now, and I couldn’t find any at any other stores, so, when Nike sent an email that they were removing the customization option from their website for Canadians (something about tariffs 😒) I knew I had to order a pair.

Cut to a month and half later, they arrived yesterday and they look so good but are way too small! Like a full size too small. Turns out that’s just how they are sized. Thankfully they are eligible for a refund, so I started the process for that. And yesterday was the last day to order customs so I panic-reordered a larger size 🤞

THURSDAY APRIL 23

Today we drew Bridgerton at ART HANG PARTY! and it was lovely.

I put a poll up in last week’s post about timing, and it was decided we would do 6 references for 10 minutes each. But I really wanted to included the first one of the Lady Whistledown gossip sheet and 10 minutes felt much too long for it, so we started with a quick 4-minute warmup. And then I couldn’t have an uneven number of references so we ended with a bonus 5-minute.

Anyway, it was nice to draw people in fancy dresses! I used my Cretacolor Mega Color pencils, which I haven’t used for so long1.

FRIDAY APRIL 24

Some of you may remember when I was planning what art supplies I was going to take to Tokyo that Luca (pronounced: Lutzah) mentioned that if you turn the pans inside this little Roman Szmal travel palette vertical instead of horizontal you can fit a full 15 half-pans in! I did that during the livestream but never ended up filling them.

The left side are little pieces of Daniel Smith watercolour sticks, and just this morning over coffee and a video I was inspired to fill in the right with some of my favourite Holbein colours (Helen was talking about selecting art supplies for travel and plein air).

After work I ran out to get my license renewed, and since I was close I headed to the mall for a quick wander. I found the most beautiful vase for my new fresh flower obsession, along with a silly mug that looks just like our friend’s dog that I need to remember to take to Japan next time we go.

My page had pink already swiped all over it so I’m not sure this really shows off the colours, but I can tell it’s going to be a really nice palette to use!

Do you ever just see something and feel the immediate need to have it? That happened to me with this teeny tiny 20th Anniversary Traveler’s Notebook. It is the size of a business card and fits in the palm of my hand!

After dinner I pulled up the replay of and ’s ‘Lessons from David Hockney’ drawing session2 and had a nice time interpreting a couple of their references, using the little watercolour palette from Friday (I think this is a better representation of some of the colours), and then spent the rest of the time catching up on the last three days of self portraits while listening to the chatter in the session.

It was such a nice way to spend a Saturday evening.

It has been a while since I’ve been inside the world of Bridgerton—I think I watched the first season when it first came out, and I have listened to a few audiobooks—so I’m not exactly an expert but I do know that we are in for a treat!

MONDAY APRIL 13

Couple of things I would change on my daily self portrait, like maybe not giving myself crazy-eyes and adding in my lower lip, otherwise I really enjoyed working in soft layers from a super high-contrast reference.

Today was another good mail day as my new stickers arrived!

Instead of just ordering more colours of AHP stickers, which I did do with the blue and pink in addition to the classic colourway, I ordered some new designs!

The shape shape colour! sticker was inspired by the wise words of the wonderful on how to tackle the most difficult of subjects (aka all of them). 𝙎𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙚 𝙨𝙝𝙖𝙥𝙚 𝙘𝙤𝙡𝙤𝙪𝙧! has become a bit of a mantra at ART HANG PARTY!, for me at least!

We all know that ART HANG PARTY! wouldn't be ART HANG PARTY! without a little 𝙨𝙡𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩 𝙥𝙖𝙣𝙞𝙘! and now we can all lean into it with this sticker 😅 This sticker was designed by AHP friend Kate Maber of Hey Hey Ginger!1

And then there’s Simon, because everyone needs this handsome fella on the cover of their sketchbook!

THURSDAY APRIL 16

Today we collectively tackled the challenge of drawing bicycles at ART HANG PARTY! A lot of bicycles!

We started with a little historical review of the first bikes ever made (not confirmed), which we saw two at a time for 4 minutes, then just a bunch (38 to be exact) more bikes which we saw two at a time for 3, then 2 minutes. Thrilling recap, I know. There was also lots of chat about biscuits and cookies :)

At the end we tested our new knowledge of bicycle anatomy by drawing one from memory! LOL I’m just glad I remembered the pedals…

If there is a lovelier way to spend the evening than wondering around an art gallery with friends I’d love to hear it, because that’s what , Steph and I did this evening and I don’t know how to finish this sentence LOL2.

Here are the artworks that I captured in my sketchbook, along with a new set of Faber-Castell markers that felt like the perfect little colour palette I picked up at the art store beforehand.
