THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 26 @ 7:00PM ET on YouTube
I wasn’t quite sure what references to pull for this “lettering” theme, but then I remembered about a website I’ve long had saved in my bookmarks filled with 1960’s and 1970’s ephemera which feels just fun and whimsical enough for ART HANG PARTY!
✏️🤗💖✨
Next ART HANG PARTY! will be Thursday, October 3 at 7pm et on YouTube
Theme: CORAL! (optional homework! prep a sheet of paper or sketchbook spread with a flood of underwater coral colours to draw over top of during the session!)

MONDAY SEPTEMBER 16
I don’t know about you but it feels like summer is going to last forever this year! To prove that point we decided to head over to Toronto Island to let Simon have a bit of a swim before we settled ourselves in the shade for a nice chill afternoon by the water.
Not much swimming was done because the water is a lot shallower than previous years, but Simon did lay down in the water for a solid 15 minutes, which he has never done before! Proof it was hot!
We found a nice shady spot on the other side of Hanlan’s Point and I did some sketchbooking, starting with this little watercolour sketch
Then I asked Ray to pick out a supply from all that I brought, and he chose the fluorescent pink solid paint marker, to which I added some ArtGraf.
And then I did this fun sketch using the remnants of my homemade rainbow markers
And a sketch of a lantern (I think) on the edge of the water. I should have kept working at this but did not.

TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 17
I knew I wanted to use my granulating Gansai Tambi watercolours and Inktense pencils so I went looking for a drawing session that would suit.
I thought I was going to do the
Tortoises with TJ Marston session but remembered I did that one live as soon as I started it, so I switched over to the replay of the Owl session with Katie Moody. The little quizzical guy in the bottom left is my favourite!

WEDNESDAY SEPTEMBER 18
I felt like playing with single line and wash today, and for whatever reason I thought it would be fun to draw groceries. I did a search of “fancy online grocery store” and Trader Joe’s popped up so I went with it (we don’t have it here so it does always feel a little special)
I was looking for something to watch on TV and came across an older show (I think from 2012) called The Paradise, about a department store in the early 1900’s(?). The costumes were pretty fun so I decided to pause it in a few places and do some sketching.

THURSDAY SEPTEMBER 19
It was Landscapes from Notes at ART HANG PARTY!
I love it when we try something new! The way it worked was we made a quick sketch of the reference photo using just a pencil, writing colour notes on the sketch.
Then I removed the reference photo from the screen and we drew or painted the landscape from our notes!
Here are a few side by side comparisons. See how fun! It adds a level of abstraction and simplification in the colour piece that would be hard to achieve if I just went straight in with colour. Also using watercolours helps with that on a short timer 🫠
10/10 recommend.

FRIDAY SEPTEMBER 20
Hands up if you are still enjoying what feels like an endless summer 🙋♀️
We are still solidly in the mid-20’s here and so we decided to take the afternoon and spend it at Trillium Park, perched atop a grassy hill overlooking Lake Ontario (across the water in the beachy area is where we started our week over at Hanlans Point; see Simon chilling in the water above)
I have to say that using a viewfinder really does help with composition! Without it, I would have tried to fit everything you see in the background of this photo onto my tiny little sketchbook spread. With it, I was able to focus in on the little intersection where the two paths meet. Huh!
Again with the viewfinder! I just used it quickly for this one to figure out where the rooftop would hit, then freely scribble away with Neocolor IIs.
And then using the viewfinder as reference, haha! I couldn’t find much else to draw so I thought I’d capture the materials I brought with me.

SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 21
I did it! I actually finally definitely went to an Urban Sketchers event!
It was over at the Distillery District, a really pretty historical-ish part of downtown. It was more of a demo than meet-up, but nothing like offering free watercolour samples and potential to win art supplies to get me to actually go.
Everyone got a free pan of Rosa Gallery watercolour (I got green!) and a dot card with 10 other colour samples that we used during the session.
The paints were actually very nice. They were very pigmented and super-easy to activate. I just had my little water brush with and didn’t have to refill it at all.
I did some cheeky (but not really because it was encouraged) people sketching using what is becoming my favourite combo - a 2B graphite crayon and fluorescent pink solid paint marker.
And someone even drew me!
After the session I went and bought a set of the watercolours LOL. They remind me a lot of my Roman Szmal set, with the creaminess and texture, but the colours in this Urban Sketchers kit are more urban compared to the landscape colours of Roman’s. Plus there was a discount, so….
After dinner I had another play with the watercolours using some photos my friend Norris sent me from his trip to Morocco! These are not my best work, but it was fun anyway.

SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22
I’m currently sitting enjoying a cider over ice waiting for the finale of Sunset Disco to start! Ray has worked hard all summer on this event, every Sunday putting on a house music party at Joe Bird, a local bar along the waterfront. The lineup is stacked and it’s guaranteed to be a good night!
Obviously no art will be made, but much dancing will ensue (not by me though cause I cannot dance)
Bits from this week!
